If you can play the HD footage in Windows Media Player you should be able to edit it in Movie Maker.
If your running XP the older version may not support the file type. If you know someone with Windows 7 see if you can talk them into installing Windows Movie Maker Live (free from Microsoft) and try it on it.
What file format is the video in?
