Hi Brice, I think it depends on you. Personally, I suggest having a kit to start with, at least the first time. after that there are no limits.
I've been in RC for over 30 years, and bought my Globe Liner when they first came out. It went together completely stock the first time, but over the years has gone through several evolutionary changes. Currently it's going through another mod, mostly to the frame. If you do start from scratch, rest assured, you'll get all the help you need here.
