Actually there is or was such an annual event about an hour from where I live that happened every Spring. Apparently it was done over 17 quarters of land, though I don't know if it all was adjoining or spread out and the land owner supplied all the ammunition.. I heard that one of the years was approx 22,000 gophers and 44,000 rounds = 50% kill rate or 10 cents a gopher.
I never went to it, as I was busy taking care of my own farmwork.
It'd be interesting to know how they coordinated such an event, with so many ppl around shooting in all directions.. I would hazard a guess and say only .22 shorts were allowed.
Between my own diligent efforts of poisoning & the cooperation of mother nature the last couple of Springs, the gopher population is nothing like it was two yrs ago.
