Your two main rails appeared to be galvanized which will explain the white looking residue and while welding the gas it puts off will contaminate your shielding gas from the welder. I am assuming you using a MIG welder and you would have to remove almost all of the coating and possibly acid wash the parts to get the most of it out but if it is good galvanizing you won’t get it all out.
