I dont have mine in paint yet, I plan on painting my dump bed the same color as the cab so I figured might as well wait till I have everything ready and paint it all at once.

but I have about 9 coats of primer total on mine right now and it is pretty darn smooth. I would sand after 2-3 coats of primer until you just start to see white nylon, then its time for primer again.

IMO you NEED to fill up the texture of that 3d printing or its just going to be too rough, I mean that texture is probably similar to sandpaper of less than 100 grit. If you going to use metallic paint than its very important to have it totally smooth with something like 600 grit so the metallic doesnt fall into the low spots.
