Hi from London
Found this forum while researching my Mercedes build.
I'm new to RC. Sort of. Back in 1982 I discovered toy porn in the form of a Tamiya catalogue I got my hands on. I grew up in Africa so anything from that catalogue was pretty much unobtainable, so when I discovered computers in the mid-80's RC was all but forgotten. Until May last year, when I saw a YouTube clip of the Tamiya Mountain Rider. Got one, built it, and... hooked. Too many kit builds out there, and I like making stuff, so I scratch-built a Ford Bronco Concept from 2004. It sits on a Vaterra Ascender. Doors, hood and boot open and close, and the roof comes off in two parts. Also made a Big Oly wing for it. It's not quite finished because I started on an Unimog 401. After that I customised a China Jeep JK body from Ebay into a River Raider ST replica, this time on a GCM J2 Skeleton chassis. Destroyed that body at a competition in June, so built a new one, designed to take a hit. This one is a bit of a mashup of the Jeep Trailcat Concept and the Jeep Porkchop. While building the second Jeep I also built a re-released Sand Scorcher. This one still needs lights, an interior, and a driver. Which brings us to the reason for signing up here. I have three scratch builds on the go, all of them trucks. First is an Oshkosh with portal axles. The next is a Bedford RL. Lots of curves on this one. Finally the Mercedes Benz LPS 1418, which just got a build thread here. That's it from me, for now. Mike Last edited by Fourth Protocol; 10-06-2016 at 03:38 PM. |

Thanks man. You know how it goes though, I just see all the mistakes Happy to share everything I can, although I'm sure I'll learn more than I can pass on. Some amazing builds on here!

Re: Hi from London
Thank you! You're right. A year ago I thought two trucks would do - the Tamiya, and the Vaterra Ascender which would host any scratch builds I might do. I now have 7 rigs and 9 bodies!!
Thanks Mr. Farmer, and thanks for the welcome. The word "scaler" is interesting to me, as it's used pervasively in the RC crawler space. I like realism at a a smaller scale, so apart from the green Jeep and (once complete) the Oshkosh my builds are mostly for light trails rather than rock crawling and mud bogs. I like detail, and stuff that opens and closes as it might in meatsapce |
