I'd bet doll hairs to dollars that it's entirely mechanical failure... either there's some grit in the gearheads or some component of it is bent... the motors are stalling out. Take one gearhead apart at a time, just incase you have a brain fart while taking it apart & forget exactly how it goes back together - you'll have the other gearhead to refer to.
