Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Reg your truck and parts are looking great as always! Do you form your own small brass angle or do you have a source to buy it from?

Thanks! Angle is home brew. I just sheared and bent it. Not as crisp of an edge as I would like but it will do. Like I said before, I've never worked with brass sheet before. So far it seems pretty good. When I made other parts out of copper sheet it was more difficult. The brass shears and bends and solders nicely. It also takes more heat than the copper before it goes soft. Not too many more parts will be brass on this but there might be the odd thing. Mostly aluminum from here on out. |

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Reg, Your brass work is outstanding. Not getting as crisp of an edge actually looks better than if you had used boughten angle. Boughten angle actually has too sharp of an edge. Works great for making frames but does not look as good as yours for making bracing. Now I have to learn your techniques for aluminum forming.
Any of your handmade vehicles put most of us in a second class when it comes to accuracy and realism. I look forward to seeing any of your builds.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks very much Lynn. I have a lot to learn with all of this but the brass seems fairly forgiving compared to working with aluminum all of the time. I think I would benefit from having a MAP gas torch so that I could heat things up quicker on larger objects? The torches I have seem to work well on most things though. I am enjoying working with the brass. I wish I had used some of it on my big KW but I also didn't have a lot of the tools that I have now back then. I guess that's called progress...
OK, so a few days have gone by and I've been working on this pretty much steady. When I'm not working on it, I'm thinking about it to the point where I'm losing sleep again. Oh well, I guess it's good to be excited about your work.lol Anyway, it may not seem like I've accomplished much but a lot of the stuff has been fiddly and time consuming. I made a plate for under the hood and mounted the electronics, planned out where the wiring would go, took the plate out, drilled holes, routed wires, ect. I also made the air tanks although only one is mounted right now because I'm a bonehead and didn't take pictures of the brackets holding the others in place on the 1:1 truck. There are a few other details as well but no point in rambling on. I got started on the dump box today so I feel like I've seen the top of the mountain and have started down the other side! This box is going to be a challenge but they all are in same way or another...lol |

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys. Yes, I am very nervous about painting it. Painting is not my forte so until it's done I will be stressing. I'm hoping to get the truck completed soon so that it gets painted while it's still summer and warm out. The plan is to have the box powder coated(silver) and the rest will be yellow except for a little green on the hood top. At least these trucks had pretty simple paint jobs! I think there is at least 1-2 weeks worth of work left to do on her yet. I will see what I can get done in the next day or two and then it has to go back on the shelf while I work on a job that showed up yesterday. for the HD but for the other job.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Reg,
What do you use for a primer on the aluminum? This has always been a sticking point with me. Either use no primer and hope or make a mess trying different paints!!

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I usually only prime stuff that needs some light bodywork. I use regular spray paint most of the time so it sprays on thick. Too many coats add up and I lose details. My Hayes is painted with Valspar paint and the box still hasn't worn thru from hauling gravel. The KW is done with Plastikote. Both seem to spray and stick well. I was told they are both made by the same manufacturer but I can't say for sure.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys. Yes, we had a great BS Joe! It was good to finally meet you in person and shoot the breeze over the weekend. I don't think there is much magic in my welding ability though. The magic is in the grinding filing and sanding afterward!
