I've been looking into some options for making 'Bowden cables' to run the racks cleanly.

The sleeve spring-a-ma-thing part is the big issue but these seem to be viable, going by other builds and ideas i've run across:
Rc truck differential locker cables. (Ready made option if small enough)
"Wave A" springs (made somewhere in japan, hard to source)
Teflon sleeve (many suppliers, may reduce max force)
Brass tube (for the non-bendy parts)
Guitar string spring (haven't seen it tried yet)

With pull-cables made of 'heavy braided fishing line' or 'fishing line steel leader'.
