A Kress slab carrier
Seems like I been in the picture sharing mood lately and realized I got one more good one for everyone I'm sure!
I live in a steel town and the steel plant has some large, odd looking machines to make it all happen. its a slab carrier and hauls these giant steel plates that are 2ft thick! This model is based on a 621E scraper front end and the back built by Kress. it can handle up to 3 slabs at a time. There is a 657 version that can haul 5-6 slabs and makes this look like a toy! these pics are from our shop the last time we did a certified rebuild on it. The second of 2 carriers. Call me crazy but...someday, I would love to make a RC version of this thanks for looking. Mario |

Re: A Kress slab carrier
You're crazy!
How much air do you put in the tires?

Re: A Kress slab carrier
I deserved that one. Lol
The tires are 12ft tall and spec is 120psi ! that's a whole lotta boom! Stored in them especially with a load! This model can lift 100 tons. The largest can lift 250 tons and travels at 20 mph! No drive in the rear wheels but massive 4ft wide disc brakes. 1.4 million for new. A rebuild runs just under a million so saves them cash and we get the work. [QUOTE=Finster;96859]Cool pics of an interesting machine. Thanks for sharing...[/ Google. Kress carriers and you'll see all kinds of wild equipment for the steel industry. |

Re: A Kress slab carrier
I've seen the Kress pot-carriers used in a steel plant in Arkansas. The pot contained molten steel moved from the furnace area to the pouring and rolling mill area via a dedicated road. Occasionally, a pot truck would wreck itself or hit a vehicle crossing their road - not pretty. Anyway, strange looking but very interesting products Kress makes.

Re: A Kress slab carrier
Wow Mario, just found your thread. I run the six wheel straddle type myself. Center wheels are driven and the four on the corners do the steering. This type can run up and down rows piled 8 slabs high.

Re: A Kress slab carrier
Wow! that thing is huge! I didn't know you worked in the steel industry Craig, looks like operating that beast would be a blast!
I just started a rebuild of a pot hauler about two weeks ago as a matter of fact. It's also based on a 621E scraper but is one of only 3 ever built in a partnership with CAT. The cab is built by Cat for Kress amongst a few other components. This is a big project for me. First time seeing and working on one. We have a 425K budget and has to be back at the steel plant for June 15th! Needless to say I'm gonna be busy the next few months! I'll make sure I get some pics as the build goes and post. Mario |

I've been in slag/steel since 1992 (Local 150 Operating Engineers), loaders, plants, dug hot pits for a while in a melt shop, drove trucks and slab haulers. Like the slab haulers best, clean, cool and warm! I have never had any ambition to run a pot hauler os slag away, very hot and dangerous work. |
