Default Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style

Well, I figured when I bought my KH that I would get to this eventually....
I have spent the winter months making stuff for other folks(thank you for the business!) but things have slowed a little now for RCP's and summer shows and commercial fishing are approaching. This is the first time in three years that I haven't had a least one scratch build going so to say the least I have been feeling the itch to build something for myself! I don't have any major plans for this build as I will be cheating and using a Tamiya chassis. I will however, (in my usual style) be making everything else from aluminum. My plan is to build a Hayes HD dump truck from the late 50's early 60's era....

Here's what I have done since this morning...

I started out just the same as I did with my beloved 850. I traced some things out and started cutting. Then some welding and grinding. 4 hours later I have a cab....

Thanks for looking! Heading back out to the shop to start on the rest!

Reg

Reg, why are you building such a small truck? You feeling okay? You're off to another great start! The cab looks very smooth. Almost hot rod looking, in it's raw state like that. Very cool.

Nate I haven't been feeling well for over a month but I don't think it has much to do with the size of this truck unfortunately.lol Yeah it is small but it's kinda fun. I think this is about as close to a scratch build as I will ever do in 1/14 though. My inner child likes bigger toys best!

I got a bit more done this afternoon....

Thanks for looking!

Nice work! Looks good!! It looks so easy to weld like that,,,,, key word , looks, I've got to learn how to weld aluminum. Still trying to polish a tird for most of my welding!!

Thanks...and it's not!...easy that is.LOL It's not that hard though for the most part. It takes a lot more co-ordination than MIG welding and that's where I suffer. I have a hard time keeping still enough and contaminate my tungsten...It makes me say bad words! Welding bigger pieces is easy but small stuff....

A little update from today. I made up a rad guard. some shutters, trimmed the fenders to there final shape, made the headlight mounts and guards, cut the hole in the front bumper, modified some old Clod rollbar lights that I've had in a drawer for 24 years to work as my headlights and then bolted it all together...

Awesome! Reg did Hayes use KW cabs? It likes an early kW cab. Keep it up!

Thanks guys. Hayes used their own cabs but I believe the design was basically unchanged from 1954-1975 when they stopped building trucks. They did have quite small windows like the early KW cabs that's for sure.

Thanks a lot!

This is a Hayes HD that we saw in Dawson City YT last summer. An old guy had been using the truck to haul paydirt but had since retired and the truck was up for sale. I believe he said it was a 1969. My truck is not really based off of this particular truck but they were all very similar as far as the cab is concerned.
