Hi Lou. Rob here, met you and Greg at Port Alberni. UPS has posted new rates on their web site for brokerage rates. Just ordered frame material for my Globe Liner and I'll let you know how I make out.

Don't get me wrong, I've been ripped off quite a few times myself by UPS. The trouble for me is that USPS or Canada post won't handle anything over three feet in length. Found a company in Buffalo NY that sells extrusions that are close to the Tamiya diamentions for truck frames but they won't ship by mail! Too bad. So I went to the UPS site.
,http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shi...clearance.html and it shows the current rates. As four pcs four foot long are only $25.00 I figure that the fee will $7.00 and worth a try. Who knows what may happen but it's worth a shot.

I'm with you on this one. I had a ups guy delivering a set of pickup tires to my house and let one get away from him while rolling them down the driveway and put a nice scuff mark down the side of my car, then denied it! Never did get anything outta them A-holes for that screw up. UPS sucks!!

I have a UPS distribution center 5 miles from my house. I get pachages quite often and I've never had a problem. So far when I ship, I only ship USPS Priority Mail. And to me it's fairly cheap.
And UPS always puts my packages in our inclosed porch. Population of our town, 6200. So maybe it's a small town thing. Plus I know the delivery guy. That prolly helps a smidge.

I have a distribution center fairly close to my house also, so no problems here really. Except for the 50 year old UPS drivers who glare at you when they drive by and chew you out when your ball "almost hits they're back tire"! What can brown do for ANYBODY?!

I haven't had any problems with them, or Fedex, for the most part. Though I prefer USPS. I ordered a frame for my Globeliner, was hoping it'd come that day, but it wasn't in the mail, so I figured it'd come next day. Well...an hour after that, the door bell rings, and there's this guy standing on the porch, and he hands me my package, and I ask if he's a courier. He said no, and told me he was a supervisor, and my package got mis routed. I thought that was pretty cool.

Sorry to jack your thread and ramble on there. LOL Hopefully you'll start getting better luck with your packages.

Tamiya Cowboy- Sorry to hear about your dog.

Obviously my reply is a little dated but I only recently found this forum. I buy a lot of stuff from the US. To avoid the high cost of shipping and brokerage fees to Vancouver Island I ship items to a package receiving place in Blaine, Washington. I get to Vancouver regularly and, when I do, I just go across the border to Blaine and pick up the items I shipped there. It works pretty good and has saved me a lot of money. Of course, the vendor must allow separate billing and shipping addresses but almost all do.

I got burnt with the plow from freddy. got sent via ups and it had a $71 fee attached to it when it arrived. 50 some dollar brokerage fee. felt like sending it back but that would have probably just made it worse.

still it was not as bad as the time i ordered stuff off of thinkgeek.com!! it arrived nice and fast and no fee when it arrived. then week later a letter arrived from some company demanding payment immediately or it would be going to collections in 14 days! what a load of bs that was!

The import laws can be pretty complicated. If there is duty payable, it depends on the country of origin as to how much duty is payable. It you really want to do reaseach, you can go through the CBSA Tariff:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-com...blmod-eng.html

Depending on what the item is, general hobby parts would likely fall under Chapter 95 - Toys while radio control items would likely fall under Chapter 85 Electrical Etc. Raw materials,i.e. metals would be under Section XV.

Duty and taxes are different. Duty is payable under the tariff unless the tariff says no duty is payable. There is no duty for items that fall under NAFTA. So, no duty is payable when purchasing items made in the USA. Of course, many things purchased from the US are made elsewhere and duty should be payable but isn't because CBSA doesn't look that closely at it when it is imported ... but they could.

Taxes are always payable when importing goods unless there is an exemption, ex. by mail items $20 and under are tax free as are gifts $60 and under. So why do some things valued above this make it through by mail? Because CBSA missed it when sorting it at the mail facility when it comes into Canada or decided it wasn't worth the effort to process.

In person at the border it depends on how long you have been absent from Canada ($50 exemption for 24 hours, $400 exemption for 48 hours, $750 exemption for 7 days). Practically, if you are only bringing in a small amount of goods ($100-$300) after an afternoon of shopping, you will almost never have to pay taxes because the border guard will send you on your way.

I am always prepared to pay what I am legally required to and consider it a bonus when I don't have to. I have had way more bonuses that not over the years.
