Default Transmissions & Transfer Boxes for 6x6

Since I'm new to this I thought a new thread on transmissions would help all of us new comers a lot, since there are many options that the experts know about which could save us a lot of wasted time and $ by buying the wrong gear.

So my questions are:

Options for 6x6 low speed - high torque?
Options to engage and disegage the front differential
RC4WD 3 speed - has anyone used this transmission - how about the gear ratio's - feed back please
RC4WD R2 seems ideal for front diff engagment - what about the ratio - will it be fast

One of the guys has come up with a very neat idea for front wheel drive by including a drive train off the rear of the transmission which has given me a lot of food for thought...maybe adopt the RC4WD system to the front drive worked of a servo?

Anyway lets see what ideas you guys comes can come up with. I'm sure it make interesting reading

Thank you all,

Bob

Yes I have the RC4WD 3 speed in in my all wheel drive dump I only have it becase I traded a guy who wanted a better ESC for his VTA car. If I were to rate it on a buying scale it would be at the bottom. Before any one says any thing it is a realy nice trans but it is to expensive for the other options out there and it also requires a high torque servo to shift it. The trans is only AWD in first, second and third is rear only this could be a + or - depending on what you want. here is a pic of the truck.

Another alternative is the tamiya 3 speed and an axial trans as a transfer case this is good becase the axial also works as a 3:1 GRU here are some pics of my set up in my Mack.

Another option I used was the RC4WD R2 and an axil trans this was due to lack of room in the cab for the trans and the trans ended up over top of the front drive axle so I need ed a way to get the power to the front axle and the speed of this truck is perfect as well as the power. Her are some pics of this set up.

I hpoe this helps
Travis.

Ha, the RC4WD 3 speed when first released, the front output spun opposite the rear output. Simple fix on their part with an idler gear, but come on, really?
This looks pretty slick though, 2 speeds and selectable 2WD/4WD.

my first 6 WD I did with a E-maxx tranny
( the Globeliner shown in this post below )

the German Krupp ( same post ) has the stock Tamiya 3 speed with a transfer case ( which is unfortunately not available anymore )

The most recent 6WD’s I do with the stock Tamiya 3 speed and add the transfer-case from the F-350 via a new rear-tranny plate I machine myself .
This particular 6WD was build with just stock Tamiya semi-truck parts with the exception of that adapter-plate for the transfer-case and the drive-shaft between the rear axles

Hi Willy, thanks for your info. Are you able to build a F350 6x6 for me please.

You mean something like this or just with the F350 transmission?

I was thinking more like putting a drop box on the back of the 3 speed Tamiya 1/14 truck gearbox. I would try myself but I do not have the tooling.

I think what he is talking about is the early RC4WD transmissions. Sounds like they botched up the design and the outputshafts spun the opposite ways, which could cause some problems, if one can't flip the axles or swap the ring gear to the opposite side. I don't think it was really a question. He was just saying.

Can't open the link, says I need 30 points and I have 30 points already, must be some problem with the system. I'd very much like to view it though.

Bob
now it’s gone anyways …
I remember seeing a question from you about the difference between the regular 3 speed transmission and the F-350 transmission ?
Sure you can buy the parts for the F-350 transmission , but for the cost just for the transmission alone ( as long you don’t find it with any luck used ) ,
You may just buy a complied F-350 kit and sell the stuff you don’t need .
As comparison just getting the F-350 transfer-case parts and making this adapter-plate will run you much cheaper .

F-350.................. regular 3speed............. adpaterplate
http://www.customrcmodels.com/Trucks...wd_project.htm

The F-350 transfer-case is NOT a direct bolt on to a regular 3 speed transmission .
( except , you do a little cutting and drilling or make such adapter plate )
The F-350 transmission has an overall higher gear-ratio , since the transfer-case works also as a gear-reduction . the internal components of a F-350 transmission are basically the same as a regular 3 speed transmission , except that it’s build a little different ,
with the shift-rod and shift-forks on the other side , and the motor is mounted on top and it has a slipper-clutch

semi-truck 3 speed transmission

F-350 3 speed AWD transmission

I Hope that covers your questions ?

Yup, exactly! Nothing at you fhhh. I forget what they cost now when they were released but the really? was aimed at they released a product that would cause your axles to play tug-o-war.

No problem I just wasn't sure if you were talking about their screw up or why it is not my favorite 3 speed. I will say their R2 is perfect for an AWD truck if you don't mind only two gears it is so quite and smother. I will be using the R2 again in an upcoming build.

I see there are quite a few different models of the R2. Which model do you think is best suited?

Willy, thank you for your excellent clarification for the F350 box.
