anyone modified one of these to be more powerful

If you are talking about the one sold by Bobcat at their Bobcat Store for about $120, then I too am interested in learning more about modifying one of these "toys". My grandson has a real T-190 and I'd like to present him with one of these painted up to look just like his.
The problem as I see it is that the drive motors don't have variable/proportional speed control. The bucket movement is okay, but full speed as soon as you press the levers isn't.
Can anybody help me convert this unit to have variable speed control?
