I did a little test on a spare piece using some the rust oleum blue i had. The finish of course came out really dull. So I hit it with some rustoleum clear. And this is the end result.

Forgot about painting the filler cap, so took care of that.

It was about at this point i realized that theres a pretty serious problem with the paint. Its not sticking to the factory primer for shite.... Its chipping off really easy. So now I have tons of time and money into a **** paint job. Hooray!

Ran across a misaligned hole for one of the door hinges. Decided to drill it out and use a nut on the back side.

Heres how the roll bars looked out of the box

And after some careful bending.

Roll bars in.

Inner fenders. They are thin vacu formed styrene with felt applied on one side. Kind of a neat idea.

Cut to shape and installed.

Rear door hinges.

Rear door installed temporary till i get the paint sorted out.

Front door pillars.

Pillars installed to dash and firewall.

Shot of how it all goes together. Fender and windshield piece aren't installed just placed to give an idea.

Seems like a nice kit with some major flaws. But in all looks like it is a great base kit to make it just right. Just think - if it were perfect out of the box then you would already be bored of it.

Yeah i guess you have to realize the more complicated a kit is... The more there is to go wrong. Its still leaps and bounds above buying a Axial or something, as far as scale goes.

Continued building.

Rad support and body mounts

Radiator installed

At this point the body can be mounted to the chassis.

Prop rod

Fender flares screwed to fenders

Light housings mounted. I haven't bothered installing LEDs yet. Ill handle that once the paint is sorted.

Grill bolted on

Fender and inner fender/electronics tray mounted

The hardware for the hood latches

Turned out the bag labeled m1.6 screws are actually m2 screws.

Luckily I had a couple m1.6 screws that fit the bill.

Had a **** of a time getting the front fenders bolted up, the holes are a bit misaligned.

Mounted up the hood.

Done for the night. Its starting to look like a jk now...

Bloody shame about the paint chipping of so readily.

For the rest starting to look like you're almost finished apart from sorting out the electrics. Where is the ESC, receiver etc. supposed to go in this model?

I think i have the paint issue sorted out. Picked up some duplicolor etching primer and some blue that is pretty close to the tamiya blue. With the exception that its metal flake. Primer seems to be sticking pretty good. I primed and painted a test panel so we'll see after its cured. Wont be much for updates anytime soon as I have a lot of stripping and painting to do. Im also working out the details on LEDs and a controller. At least theres some light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally back at this. So after some monotonous scrubbing with lacquer thinner using rags and q-tips, Ive managed to strip a handful of the body panels.

And re prime and paint/clear a few. I'm using duplicolor etching primer paint, and clear coat. I like the new color better.

Ken sent me the Capo chassis mounted servo bracket, so I've decided to ditch the cable set up. This set up works so much better.

After thinking about battery placement. I noticed some slots in the floor that appear to be for velcro battery straps. I'm guessing this is where Capo intended the battery to go.

The only 3s battery I have just barely fits between the wheel wells. I need to conceal it somehow. Was thinking maybe building a subwoofer box or something along those lines. I'm open to ideas here. I thought maybe a cooler but that would be a big *** cooler lol.

Hi Prop, happy to see you are at it again! New paint is looking good

That servo makes way more sense than the cable set up too.

Did you get that broken cowl piece sorted out?

Stephan

Hey Stephan, good to hear from you. Im hoping this paint holds up better then the previous attempt. My test panel showed real promise but it also had a few months to cure...
I think Capo may have realized they over engineered the cable steering set up. Its just not strong enough. Probably why Ken sent me the chassis mounted bracket for free.
Ken ended up sending me two replacement cowl peices, the first got bent just as bad as the first one, most likely during shipping. The second time he shipped it in a box. It was slightly bent, but not enough to where i couldnt massage it back into shape. All is good now!

Whipped up a plate to mount up a couple leds to back light the gps screen.

Did some reassembly with the newly painted parts. Installed the wind shield and wipers.

Small update today. I spent most of my available time today getting more paint laid down.
Started by filling some casting marks on the rear gate.

Then made a panel out of styrene to match the 1:1

Covers up some of the screw holes nicely

Then I had to do a repair job on the radiator. The mounting brackets are super weak and kind of crumbled away. I tried repairing them with some tenax but they just werent strong enough.

Down to the hood and doors left for paint. Its taking alot of time as each panel is getting 9 to 10 coats between primer, paint and clear coat!

Nice fix on the radiator!

8-9 layers of paint! You have a lot more patience than I do!

Like your LED set-up on the dash too! Guess you wire them into the headlights?

Worst part is I hate painting.... Its coming out well though so im happy.

The Lighting setup on this is actually pretty complicated. The dash lights will operate with parking lights. This is going to have all the lights the 1:1 has and they will operate accordingly. Im even trying to figure out how to put a switch in the dash for a dome light....just need to figure something out.

Havent done anymore spraying yet but, Ive decided to paint the fender flares body color. Started to mask them off.

Something not included in the kit are spark plug wires. They give you these nifty spark plug type things that secure the valve covers on, but no wires for them like Ive seen in some online pics. So.... Figured Id whip some up. Started by drilling some 1/8"x1/8" styrene. I chose the proper size drill bit to allow these to friction fit onto the spark plugs, which is needed because they need to be removed in order to disassemble the motor.

Then I drilled for some small elastic type stuff I had laying around.

Chucked the stock in my drill to round off the squareness.

Used some styrene tubing and a file to contour the end to fit against the first piece.

Cut it to length, and slid it over the wire material.

Then insert wire into first piece with super glue.

Let super glue set up. Then tenax the styrene pieces together.

Make styrene dust.

The finished plugs, glued into their respective holders provided by Capo. I realize this isnt exactly scale... the plug wires seem to come out of the engine block, but when everything is assembled, it wont be very noticeable.

One of the few things Capo did not make for this kit, is an exhaust system. Its really been bugging me and I feel like it should have one. It doesnt make much sense to me to go all out and leave something like this out. So I pulled some parts from a 1:8 static model kit I have, and will be using them to build an exhaust for this.

Again, these need to be removable in order to loosen the servo screws so that the engine can be disassembled. So I drilled and tapped for some some scale hardware that will accomplish that.

The finished engine with plug wires and exhaust manifolds.
