12 channel radio and high torque motor question

Hello all. I have a 9 channel Futaba radio that has the 2.4 ghz reciever and i need to upgrade to a 12 channel radio and the corrseponding 2,4 ghz reciever. I guess my question is whats a good set up to use? I'll be using it on my rotator truck and i dont have enough channels to build a wheel lift or the out riggers.

Also what low torque motor is a good motor to run? The truck will be heavy and need all the low speed and torque it can get.

I'm partial to JR stuff because I've never had any issues with it. The 12X is the nicest radio I've laid my hands on. Magnesium frame and really solid feel. The 4 proportional knobs are probably gonna give you much better control options with your truck. Price is similar to the Futaba 12ch. Since you already have a Futaba rx you may want to go that route. Guess it depends how many you have.

I run a Futaba 12FG. I like it a lot. Not as cheap a some options out there, but it's very programmable, and you can set it up for any model. Your bound to get a lot of opinions on this question, because everyone has their favorites. I used to be a HiTec fan, but after going all Futaba radio gear, I have been extremely happy. Never a glitch or problem binding the receivers, and always reliable. I've run Futaba gear on everything from my nitro helicopter to my rock crawlers. The 2.4 giga-hertz receivers aren't cheap (for each model you want to run), but you get what you pay for.

If you are not using all channels at the same time, you can just switch a bank of servos off and another one on. Problem is that your trim and endpoint adjustment will be shared between both banks.

If the functions are only on/off (outriggers in or out, axle up or down), you might get away with even simpler stuff.

Agree with Nathan, it's all preference. Can't go wrong with JR or Futaba. Wish US r/c consumers had more choices but that's it if you ever plan to have your gear serviced.

For the motor it depends what speed controller and transmission you're using. Telling us the weight of the truck would help too.

The tranny is the stock 3 speed that is in second gear. Not gonna shift. And if i had to gues on weight id say when its all done probably in the 20-25 pound range maybe. Thanks for the help

Why not lock it in first gear if you need more torque and slow speed? You could put a bigger pinion gear on a lathe motor maybe the stock silver can for a little more speed.

First gear with a lathe motor will probably do fine - grab a smaller pinion to get a little bit more. I say this cuase I towed around a 95# dozer on a lowboy at Indy with a stock areomax. (industrial style carpet) with a stock can motor, stock transmission and running an MFU unit. Biggest issue was that the MFU couldn't handle the twim 4500mAh packs I had running it (it would over current shut down).



if it's still too fast or you want to use that three speed - i suggest a gear reduction unit. The RC4WD units that bolt inline are dcent but gear mesh needs to be watched - they don't bolt on to silver cans but I'm told they do OK with aftermarket motors.
A good friend swears by the Integy 4:1 units - I am trying one for the first time myself - they bolt up nicely and you have complete control of gear mesh. My curren tbuiild has the Integy 4:1 and an Integy 55 turn. Lots of power and lots of Torque

The integy is decently compact - due to the layout it will place the motor overtop of the servos on most trucks without moving the tranmission.

YEP - twin 55 turn motors - full 4TD - full metal drives and all.

Sounds very interesting. Never made a thread for it, did you? I remember a similar model being built and documented on Scale 4x4. Was that one your's?

Nate , someday I'll post it up I got it torn down to upgrade the under carriage so the tracks stay on . I got an idea for stronger tracks too . Chris did a good job on it . I want to pull pans with it .

Thanks guys. I'll have to check out the gear reduction units. Ill try locking it in first gear and see what it does. I forget how it works... The higher the turn on a motor the slower more torque it has? Thanks

In general that's right..... More importantly for you is more turns is more Torque.

Higher turns usually do make more torque, and spin fewer RPMs. Lower turns have more hp, and less low end power, but spin faster. Turns is basically refering to the number of times the wire is wrapped around an armature pole. A 55 turn motor will have the wire wrapped 55 times. The more you wrap the wire around the pole, the stronger the magnetic field it produces. More turns also increases the internal resistance of a motor, and the more resistance it has, the less current it will consume. That means longer run times, which is always nice.
