Fred there are several Tonka truck hoes on ebay, just type in Tonka hoe or Tonka digger, but they all look like toys, yeah I know, they are toys.

They aren't diecast but Ertl's Big Farm lineup includes (2) 1:16 excavators (John Deere and Hitachi) for around $50 each...

Saw a few of the Deere versions in Iowa at the National Toy Show this weekend.....to be honest the boom/stick seemed pretty flimsy but the cab and counterweight portions seemed like they'd make a nice base for a conversion.

Claus,Yea kinda want something a little more 1:1 lookin.
Alex, you didn't happen to get a card or name of the vender selling the deere?
Looks like the only thing I would use, would be the cab & engine cover.
The rest I would make out of aluminum.
Yea Alex,if you know how I can get my scratchers on one,That would be just peachy!
Thanks Guys!

I actually saw the Deere excavator at the Ertl (now called Tomy) Outlet Store in Dyersville, IA. Believe they were $49.99. Didn't see any of the Hitachi there though.

Like others have posted I'm sure you can get your hands on one at an online store or even better at the local Deere store as Scott has mentioned.
