Very nice video!!

You should think about locking one axle.. number 5 for instance!

Cheers

Nice video, Kerst. That block swinging that close to your operator's cab could make him very nervous if he was along for the ride.lol Still ready to see this thing make a lift.

Progress has been slow during the summer.
I mainly worked on many details and little improvements everywhere.
On the upper I added 3 outlets, 2 in the front and one in the back for functions like the telescoping and luffing winch for when the derrick mast is attached.
I also added a couple of switches ( a toggle switch and a 3 position rotary switch) on the upper (2nd picture) to switch between functions. I have only 3 2-pole circuits coming through the slewing ring. This way i can switch between functions.

Re: Liebherr LTM1800 scale 1/24

I spent the past month figuring out the mechanism to extend the 3 boom sections.
It is somehow based on the Liebherr system, one section at the time. I use a spindle, which propels 2 pins, which can hook into the bottom of each section and push it up. The whole assembly can rotate and with 3 positions available I can choose which section to extend. the motor is mounted on the side of the boom where the real one has an oil tank for the same function. Once in place the sections get locked manually.

Very interesting. I confused on the timing of each section though. I see you are using a fast lead screw to advance the sections. Does it have multiple leads? More pictures when you get a chance.

I find it hard to describe in words how it is going to work.
To reach full boom length the last section goes out first, then the one but last and then the second one.
I am using a hi-lead screw (http://www.roton.com/Mating_Componen...family=7060762) with multiple leads just to speed it up a bit. It has to travel about 22" for each section and it will take about 25 - 30 seconds for each. I think one motor will do it, but there is the option to have another motor on the other side (easy to add). This screw has a high efficiency. I tried it by hand and it works very nicely. I chose this screw partly to keep the weight down. An 3/8" acme screw is sooo heavy and has a lower efficiency.

I will make some more pictures later.

I tried it out and it works quite smoothly, but one motor is not enough, so I added the other motor. Here is a picture of the assembly:

Amazing stuff, Kerst. Serious machinery here, and working in 1/24 scale only makes it that much more impressive. I watched the video. I've always loved the look of the reeving on 1/1 cranes, and yours definately captures the effect! I'm building a crane too, and your engineering skills humble me.

I worked on the boom quite a bit. The telescoping mechanism is ready and I did some detailing, which is almost finished.
Next I will be testing the boom and getting ready for the Cabin Fever Expo in January.

Thank you all for all the compliments and encouragements!

I am preparing the crane for the Cabin Fever Expo. I just assembled it and testing the essential functions. off course half of the functions don't work, so there is a lot of fixing to be done and I will bring a lot of tools to the show.

Nothing wrong with working on your projects at the show. I was hesitant to bring my dragline years ago while it was in it's earlier stages of build but,Gary who puts the show on said bring it in. He figured there are a lot of models sitting in cars out in the parking lot who's owners are afraid of showing "work in progress"

I always bring tools and spare parts, because everything, finished or not, can break. During shows my models get to do a lot of work, at home they just sit in boxes.
Often people appreciate the works in progress more than the finished models. They give a better impression on how they come about.
Looking forward!

That is fantastic that you are bringing your crane to the show! I am looking forward to seeing it in person.

I agree with bringing spare parts and tools. I am very hard on my equipment as well and usually break something at a show.

Re: Liebherr LTM1800 scale 1/24

I enjoyed the Cabin fever Expo tremendously. It gave me the chance to try everything out, play with my cranes and meet lots of great people. It was a great weekend, but afterwards I had to catch up with a few other things, so I didn't have much time for the LTM1800 till about a week ago.
I started working on the counterweights. I make them out of AL, which is a bit on the light side, but the whole crane turned out a bit too heavy, so that compensates nicely and AL is easy to work with. The total weight of what you see on the picture is around 14 Lbs.
It is an easy job, but time intensive with lots of (hand) sawing and lots of milling.

Wonderfull build. Very, very nice.
I too only get about 4 hours a week to work on my models. The upside is there is plenty of time to mull over ideas between working on the metal. If I don't get my weekly afternoon in the workshop I feel disapointed.

Summer is usually slow with lots of other distractions, but I did find some time to work on the LTM1800.
I have worked on the Derrick mast. This set http://www.flickr.com/photos/dickvan...th/4622268767/ shows the LTM1800 with Derrick mast.

I feel your pain. Did you use fixtures like I did? I had some warping in my boom but fixed it by clamping the whole section to my metal shear's table then ran my jewelers torch back and forth quickly heating up all of the solder joints and just about all were realigned.

I did the same with a combination of clamps and weights, carefully heating up the whole section.
I had the advantage of well fitting joints so there was little danger of everything falling apart.
But it took me 4 or 5 times to get it all straight.
