Steel? Why? you have the technology & easy access to any shape of aluminum...

It's amazing what type of pictures are on the net when you do any particular search. The red truck is nice but I hear the guy that built it is a bit strange and sometimes wears a huge foam cowboy hat. I would have crapped my pants and then some with that 785!

Why don't you build a box out of aluminum and make it just like on the 1/50? Piece of piss for you my friend!

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Humm, I was thinking steel because of weight. I was thinking of using sheet metal and bending all the box stuff. I guess I can do same with alum. Just was thinking of welding and some welds wil be visible. But thinking more now,, guess alum wild be better choice. I like working with it better. Only thick stuff would be frame rails and some corner pieces. Ok it's decided, I was on the fence about what to use anyway. You two convinced me. Alum it is!!

there is no choise aluminum all the way!! you add steel to that thing and
and it will take 3 guys to lift it.

Only a suggestion but why can't you use some of that wax that they use to practices milling on for your molds. Ed

Cooper 04-03-2016 08:15 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

I could get some of the wax Ed, that stuff isn't cheep,,, it was easier for me to design and print a part then touch up and mold off that.

Started working on the dump body. Instead of having a concave bed I'm going with a flat bed. not many angles to cut, mostly all square 90s. Have to tear out hydraulic system because I'm going to weld most of the dump bed framing on the truck. Use it as a jig to keep everything inline. And taking some rough measurements for the lift cylinders I should have enough room for different stage seals. Was afraid that the retracted cylinder would be too tall while bed down in order to get full extension on bed. The bed wouldn't go up as high as pic below but that's limit before frame hits.

It will be ok, if the angle is steeper than 45 degree's!
Cheers!

Yeah that is one nutt eater that may be a little chewy for pot pie!!!

Started on sides, this time I milled two pieces at once. So,,, both sides should be identical. Have to see when I get to other pieces if they are. Always something just a tad off. Angles were 10 degrees on bottom of bed staying with the frame at10 degree. Then other angles were 11 and 21 (respective of 90). Just used angle blocks in vice and milled vertical while clamping pieces together. 3/16 edges and middle with 1/4" vertical pieces to give some depth relief without having to do much milling.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Wow! You actually know what angle you machined that stuff at? I'm not that sophisticated. I just squint one eye, tap it with a hammer and call it good.... Probably why I can never build the same thing twice....

Lookin good! I like that table too!

Cooper 04-06-2016 10:13 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Spent a bit of time trying to translate angles of model to angles on build truck. Long time fiddling with that, then just clamped some pieces together on truck and made sure angle of front bed is parallel to cab angle as that seems to be where eyes get attracted to. Maybe that freshman art class at college is finally paying off. Never quite understood about negative shapes and areas,,,, always looked at a beer can as round and not what shape it is blocking out!! Can't wait on this piece to see how I mess up with welding it!!! Lol!! Still trying to keep my welds hidden. Flat stuff is easy but inside corners don't look too pretty. Thanks for the info Ed, I'll be keeping all that stuff in mind and need to spend some time on test pieces!!!
