Mack R model ten wheeler dump

After the carson lift flop with my full frame trailer I decided to build a R model dump truck. It will be all business just like the old Mack's were. This is based off a early R model in the 66'-72' short cab model. It will have the old square fuel tanks and a straight stack. I started building a cab visor and battery boxes and should have the fuel tanks done tomorrow. Another mod will be adding a few heavy leafs in the rear springs to support the weight of a good load of dirt.

Built on a king hauler frame, front axel moved forward, motor and trans relocated forward over the servos, I used the Carson lift and motor placed in the frame center where the esc and RX will also live. I used a rc4wd driveshaft end to connect the lift motor and screw drive. The battery will live under the hood/cab where it can be easily accessed as the cab and hood pivot up and out of the way at the front bumper. Rc4wd budd rims for now but may switch over to spokes. Rc4wd metal driveline with carrier bearing due to length of driveshaft between trans and first axel...

Thanks for looking

Did you scratch build that cab? That looks nice. I'm really interested to hear your thoughts on that Carson screw drive. I've been considering one for a dump trailer. I'm curious to know how well it performs.

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

I bought the mack cab 2nd hand. Not sure where it was made. Im impressed with it.The lift might be a knock off by lesu...i got it on ebay from joes ...it works nice and smooth and seams suited better suited for short box 6 or 10 wheeler end dumps. When installing You have to find the "sweet spot" in the frame to bolt it in. Bolted in To far forward it will not lift the box very high. To far rearward and I question the strain it would see trying to lift the load. I mounted mine between the axels to get good hight and good leverage. Where it's mounted it sits about 15mm above the frame rail so that it clears the axels and allows them to articulate? This is ok because the tires will extend about 5 mm above the rails. Here are some pics focust on the lift.

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

I kinda got lucky with the amount of angle....If I moved it any further forward between the axels it would come into contact with the top of the forward tandem axel and then the box in the lowered position would have to sit another 5mm higher off the frame. If I placed it in front of the forward tandem I would not get as steep of an angle I think it was under 45 iirc...I want this thing to dump and it all slide out. My next hurdle will be an automatic tailgate lock. I want it to release as the box goes up and lock just as it lowers.. I have an idea but want to mount the bed first...

Got some more Plastic work done tonight...started on the fuel tanks and added some detail to the battery boxes. The fuel tanks will get covered in some diamond plate. I just wanted a solid thick plastic to make a sturdy tank that will hold up to abuse.

Sadly my local hobby shop closed a few weeks back. I have to order some more plastic on line now and wait for supplies to ship to me by end of this week...

Hey nice truck, I am currently working on a king hauler dump I was wondering where are you going to put the battery? i ended up making my lift mechanism for the dump body almost the same as yours but I made the motor pivot so I did not need to use a universal joint.

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

Still working on it but made a lot of progress this week...

I started on the dump box this week, its u shaped aluminum wall and floor Im using styreen for the side detail, door and bulkhead. A roof gaurd will be made after i know where the exhause stack will locate.Side boards will locate on top of the walls and a small spread pan at the rear. I used spring shackles to mount the box to the rear of the frame rails.
The bed sits on its own 20mm tall aluminum rails and will give proper clearancefor the rear axels

The lift tested good nd you can see the box has plenty of angle. I will be crossing my fingers it will lift a full load of dirt? If not i may have to revisit the lift as i still dont like how all the levrage is lost due to how far back the lift unit installs. I can't move it forward as it will interfear with the forward tandem. The drive has a u joint and the Carson lift motor is solid mounted in the truck frame rails.

I fabricated a box that will hold the battery over the motor/transmission. It's held to the frame with 4 screws so I still have easy access to the motor. A few rubber bands will keep the battery held down tight to the box
This will leave the floor space for the reciver and esc. I want as much weight over the steer axel to help with steering when its hauling a load. The cab will tilt from the front up and out of the way for access to changing the battery or electronics adjustment.

I made a cab visor and started fitting a air cleaner. The battery boxes are made and just need to mount them next to the fuel tanks.

I also got my driveshaft support bearing in and was able to test the rolling chassi for the first time.

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

Bought it from a guy selling stuff on eBay...I think it is made by the 3d printing company shapeways....there is a guy on this site that sells the same r model cab and hood and i think it's also made by shapeways? He has a superliner as well.

Sick looking mack buddy. I'm really digging this build. It's nice to see a new cab/fresh face being built. Any ideas on a paint scheme yet?

Still up in the air...being that it's modeled as a late 60's early 70's R model I'm thinking basic paint nothing flashy dark green hood and cab with a Black or dark gray box... I was also thinking of doing a long time east coast tradition of green and red...kinda like this pic.

About time theres an update!!! ;) Looks good! I'm liking it!
question- I like how the box has a nice angle but im worried it may not lift loaded being so far back? that's a lot of overhanging weight. just a thought as I was looking at it.

Hit me up next time you roll thru Pheonix too on your way to Cali

Lmackattack 01-11-2014 03:03 PM

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

Yea. Lifting force, It's got me worried too...this lift just won't fit in the frame right without it interfering with the tandems or inter axel driveshaft. If I place it forward of the first tandem it only raises the box half as much. So I'm already looking into a screw drive like your trailer had...

dabears 01-11-2014 05:35 PM

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

ok so not knowing anything about the scissor lift style what if not sure itll work but push the lift twards the front and make longer arms off the triangle piece? would that work? like I said im not sure on how all the parts move exactly as I havnt played with one yet but depending on how it all folds up can you make the arms longer? and maybe more twards the front or past the middle a little?

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

That sure is a nice looking Mack!!!

Lmackattack 01-12-2014 12:42 AM

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

I took the lift out tonight and tried a few things and I still can't get it further forward. I think longer arms may help but how this thing is designed I can't move the mounting of the lift any further forward. So even with longer arms it still will be pivoting in the same spot, thus longer arms will decrease leverage.....:o I will just have to test it out soon..

So after all that I kept working on the cab and box....I mounted the battery boxes, stack and trimmed the roof for cab lights. My next issue will be a front bumper...I'm going with the look of a steel bumper I started with plastic but I think I want to put a nice pice of steel up front I case I run into something... These old Mack's were bullet proof so I'm going to keep it in true form.

I test fitted the air cleaner and mounted the dog on the hood...after I get everything fitted I will think about paint...

Im not sure I like the budd rims on this truck. I was looking at spoke rims on eBay but they were the same ones as rc4wd sell and in my opinion don't look good...has anyone made good looking spokes wheels?

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

you know that lift might just work the way you have it. do you have room to add a cross member at the very front of the lift rails? tust to box it in so there is no twist? if you can do that I think it might be ok. all the euro guys use this setup and every one ive looked at is mounted in the same spot.

Lmackattack 01-12-2014 12:59 AM

Re: Mack R model ten wheeler dump

Yes, It has plenty of space for crossmembers up front...however Right now it has no twist at all. The box rails are solid 20mm tall and the floor and walls are formed from single sheet of .080 aluminum bent to form a box... I kinda over Built it and that's not helping the lift unit with the extra weight...

Great looking truck! Im with ya on the green and red I think that would look most fitting. Also a little weathering and this thing would be out of this world. One suggestion and maybe your already going to do it, but it might look more like the 1:1 if you move the dump box back from the cab a bit?

Here is a quick video of the dump set up i used a tamiya esc for operating the dump bed.

The ground is frozen here so I went outside and loaded it up with a full load of salt....I was surprised that it lifted it as easy as it did....I might be ok with the set up...
