RCP57's first King...

.....The trouble begins... About a month ago I was approached by one of our members to possibly "return a favour" and build a dump box for them. I had been pondering the idea of building a box for my Bruder Mack conversion and this was the kick I needed to get started. I started out by making up some press plates to bend the sides and used a brake to make the other pieces. It all came together quickly and I found myself in need of a truck so that I could get a feel for what it should look like on a King. I had been looking locally with no luck and was going to borrow a truck from Chaseracer(Jason) to get things started. I knew that a good friend of Jason's had a truck that was partially assembled but hadn't been touched in a long time so I asked(maybe begged) him to call and ask if it was for sale. Anyway to keep a long story from getting longer I was able to work out a deal and get myself a KH!

The truck has a 85 turn motor, high torque servos and aftermarket tires but that's about it. I still need a few things to get it up and running but all in good time.

Once I had the truck I figured I should build myself a dump box as well...Then I thought why not make three, or four or...

After all that BS here is my basically stock, non running KH and some dumps...

Not much size difference hey?:D

Looks good you did a fantastic job. I like your screwdrive set up, the cylinder looks nice. Can you get us a video of the dump lifting a load.

Thanks a lot Travis! I tried to do things a little differently and yet keep it a simple bolt on.
Here's a couple test vids-

Great work Reg!

What was your time line to build each box?

It'd be good to see a vid of screw drive working. ;)

Check out the post above Joe. I haven't filmed much of them in action yet but in the first video it lifts 17-18lbs. I don't know how long it would last lifting that much weight though. I have one box that is homeless at the moment...

Looks good, works good, and it is nice and simple. Job well done. Hec I build screwdrive dump trucks and I would still buy one of these I like it. I give it 2 thumbs up.

Always glad to be referred to as a kick instead of a pain ;):p
Amazing, fast work once again Reg!

You make some bad *** dump boxes. Any thoughts of doing these for selling purposes? And what is the chances of you attempting a dump trailer?

Re: RCP57's first King...

A big thanks to everyone! I was a little worried if other people would like the way I built them. I guess this all answers my question.:bounce:

Yes I would like to build some more and sell them but this is probably not the section to discuss that in.

Thanks again for all the kind words...and you're a great kicker Mario!

Here's a couple pictures of the Mack box. It is shorter, wider and taller than the KH version.

Great job Reg! glad to see you pulled the screw drive off, without having to put a subframe on top of the kinghauler frame.

Nice work, I too like the cylinder, adds a touch of scale.
Must be great having a tig and knowing how to use it!

Re: RCP57's first King...

Thanks for all the nice comments guys! For those interested in having one built, I hope to be able to do that soon. I have to work out some details on the money end of things and then I will be good to go. I will also do just the box and gate for those that wish to use their own dump mechanism. I have no plans of building any fifth wheel type end dump trailers but possibly a pup. Of course I will build one for myself first and see how it turns out.

Re: RCP57's first King...

I like your dump and lift mechanism.

Food for thought--Take the dump setup off and drop a fifth wheel on the frame using the same type of mounts.

Before you get too involved with descriptive posts of what you will do for hire Reg, you should consider opening a Vendors forum to discuss specifics there. Contact fhhhstix for details. ;)

You, as a long time member here, you have shown us a great deal of creativity & quality in your builds, a Vendor forum is likely yours for the asking. (with a very small annual fee)

Sounds good Joe, and thanks for the friendly advise. I have a few things to work out on my end before I get too involved in this but will give Travis a shout as soon as I have things sorted.

Re: RCP57's first King...

Thanks guys!

I got a hold of some ACME thread today and made up a new shaft for one of the screwdrives. I was hoping to increase the speed of the dump without having to invest in different gear motors and it looks to be a success. It's still not really fast but is noticeably quicker and the motor seems to have enough torque to handle the increase in ratio. Here's a short bench test with 2 lead acid batteries in the front of the box.

It's a small planetary gear motor.

Yes Joe, I went from 16tpi to 12tpi which I think is about 33%;)

Reg, those boxes are works of art! Seriously, if you wanted to, I am sure you could make some money building these for guys. As always, I can tell it's a well thought out, beautifully fabricated design. Just like everything else you've ever built.

Thanks a lot Nate and yes I want to!

I started putting this one together today. Just a little different than the rest. A little higher and different shape in headboard to leave room for a custom cab and I added side boards too...I still have to make the tailgate and then I will shine it up a little.

Re: RCP57's first King...

I spent nearly 4 hours this morning making these motor mounts...Man I'm slow! Machining, machining and then 77 holes drilled with the DRO, 56 of them tapped with M3 .5...

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps07e4c3bf.jpg

Espeefan 11-13-2013 01:34 AM

Re: RCP57's first King...

Slow you say? I don't think so. It's way to easy to under estimate the time it takes to manually machine even the simple looking parts. Drilling and tapping takes a lot of time too. This is why some of these models and parts cost so much money. :D
