Oil Field Prim Mover KW 396
I deiced to over haul my 6x6 rock crawler and go with something more scale. I try ed to have it done for Indy this year but the black truck was being to much of a pain in my rear. So while I was waiting for my supply's for the fire truck build I deiced to get it back out of the closet and get going with it.
SO here it is I am going off the KW 963 family of trucks. Witch there is many different ways you can order one of these monsters this is the one I liked most. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...oy/KwC5005.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...oy/KwC5004.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...oy/KwC5003.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...oy/KwC5007.jpg |
I started with a new frame 26 inches long with FH12 frame rail tips.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...IMG_0423-1.jpg Next to shorten the sleeper by a 1 1/4 http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...IMG_0424-1.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0427.jpg |
Then I cut the fenders off and angled the nose down and I lowered the sleeper to match the roof of the cab.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0428.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0429.jpg Now to start filling the hood back in. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0430.jpg [/b] |
Now to build the fenders, I built them out of 1/8 to make them good and strong.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0434.jpg Now I had to modd some stock KH air cleaners to match the ones on the real truck. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0436.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0437.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0438.jpg |
|
Now I built the tire rack for the back of the cab and I got building and did not take picks but here are some afters. All alum sheet and angle taped and screwed together with a chain rack on the passenger side.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...1116092113.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...1116092116.jpg Now to build the drum winch. I am not going to make the winch itself work but it will work. :-/ Heres the parts we need.. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0442.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0443.jpg |
Ok here is how I am making the winch work. i am mounting one of the good scale German winches. the winch that started all the other winches nice thing about these is they will pull ALOT of weight with out breaking.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0444.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0445.jpg Then I mounted a fair led in the top of the deck for the cable to come threw and wrapped the cable around the drum. So when you run the winch teh drum will turn . http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0446.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0454.jpg [/B] |
Now i still have alot of detail to go plus the trailer still needs to be built.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0451.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0453.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0452.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0449.jpg |
|
I got a little more detail work done late last night on the rig. I made a movable 5th wheel and 5th wheel ramps.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0456.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0455.jpg And as you can see in the picks above I also added a RC4WD King Kong hook. Then I added a edge for the chain box out of brass angle. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0458.jpg |
Then I made square blinkers out of 3/8 square tube and cut the King hauler amber light to fit. And I also added brush guards out of brass over the blinkers.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0460.jpg I got the tranny mounted. I used some milled shock mounts for the F350 they were the perfect size and hole pattern. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0462.jpg I also got 2 of the 3 drive shafts in my other one did not show yet. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0461.jpg Then I got the steering done. I used bigger alum tie rods and emaxx ball joints and I added alum black drive hubs and junked the plastic ones. I also used a 645 for the steering and a 5626 for the shifting. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0464.jpg |
Then i thought a set of these were fitting since it would be 11.4 Lipo and a 55 turn with a 8 tooth.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0465.jpg And the rig is getting a full set of custom milled hubs http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0466.jpg |
I got a little time this weekend to start on the trailer of the Oil Field Rig. Stock tamiya flat bed trailer with F350 leafs and CR01 wheels and tires I have added a rub rail and the roller on the nose of the trailer I still have the rear plate and roller left to do and leg and lights.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0485.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0486.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0484.jpg |
Well I got a great little package in the mail today. Lynn made me some new hubs for the beast and I must say WOW :o I was blown away when I opened the box and seen them I could not wait to get them on the rig..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0490.jpg How they look in the wheel. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0497.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0496.jpg |
Full View
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0491.jpg They really finish off the look of the wheel I am very happy with them and the quality of them is 2nd to no other.. Greg wanted some side by sides so here you go Greg keep in mind the body will be about 1/4 high when mounted. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0498.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0500.jpg |
|
I got the back plate made on the trailer last night it came out perfect I just have to do some finish work to it to clean it up and mount a brace on the back side for when I am winching loads up.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0509.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0510.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0512.jpg |
Here are some picks of how they winch onto the trailer..the trailer lay's down on the ground perfectly just like it should.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0515.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...IMG_0517-1.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0519.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...IMG_0518-1.jpg |
|
I got a little paint and decals on the Oil Rig trailer a week ago just did not have time to get picks up so here they are..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0711.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0713.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0712.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0714.jpg |
I also got a new King Pin Plate milled out of derlin that Lynn made for me I am trying it out for him. They are just perfect and there is much less friction between the trailer and 5th wheel also the derlin wont mark up the painted 5th wheels like the alum plate does.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0715.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...IMG_0717-1.jpg |
I am about finish up the KW 396 Oil Rig Prime mover. I finished up the front bumper and the grill so the chassis was off to paint. I got the hole frame tore down and etch primed and then base prime then 4 coats of single stage paint on top. Then I was able to start putting the chassis back together so here are some picks.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0919.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0920.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0921.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/IMG_0923.jpg |

Mate that is fantastic, excellent in fact. It obviously gave a great deal of thought and must be pretty happy with it.

Re: Oil Field Prim Mover KW 396
Wow! This thing is stunning. I love how you painted the Tamiya transmission and motor Cat yellow. I was kicking around the idea of doing it to my truck as well and seeing it has sealed it's color fate. The big tires and paint just make the truck. She looks great. Good job Cowboy!http://www.reddead.net/forums/images...2_b/cowboy.gif

Re: Oil Field Prim Mover KW 396
Hi Paul,
Are the rear diff's stock Tamiya and what is the front diff? I would also like to know where you bought your winch from please. I would also like to comment on your tidyness of your work bench, it shows in your workmanship. Bob |
