Trailer for my Black Devil

Hi...

Now that my Black Devil is finished, I decided to modify my flatbed trailer to give him a corresponding trailer.

There are some modifications needed, because I want to test a powder coating and because of that all parts the must be painted must be of metal. So all plastic parts must be replaced.

The list of needed modifications:

- The plastic edges must be removed
- The front plate must be replaced by a new one. I hate the hole for the Tamiya lightning set and the edges must be filled if the plastic edges are removed.
- The plastic traverses for stabilization will be replaced by 8x8mm U.sections
- The side L-sections at the side must be replaced. The must be longer because of the removed plastic edges and the former existing side lights will be removed.
- The side light LEDs will be removed completely
- I must create a hole in the frame to hold a small box for the Beier electric module. It's a few millimeters to wide to fit between the frame parts.
- The black box below the frame will be removed completely.
- The rear light section will be replaced by the complete new construction. Actually I don't know what it will look like. I hope to get some ideas during the next time.
- The frame will get L-section holders between the frames to hold the battery and also to mount the underfloor light similar to the Black Devil.

This project will be a "time filler" project if the roadtrain stucks.

This is the actual state:

Because of the fact that the roadtrain project stucks (a screw tap is broken and I'm waiting for a new one)I started with the front plate replacement.

Here's the result

The gap will be closed by longer L-sections.

That's it at the moment...

Re: Trailer for my Black Devil

Hi...

Just a short update.

3 items of the list are done.

- The plastic traverses are exchanged to aluminium ones. 36 holes, 36 screw threads (made in 3 steps per hole). Uff... It's done...
- The old LED lights are removed
- The box below the frame is removed.

But one small item is also added.
- New brake shoe holders made of brass so that they also can be powder coated.

This is the actual state:

Hi...

Another update, the side of the bed are exchanged and the gaps of the removed plastic edges are closed now.

Let me show you...

I found out that I must add an opening over the pingpin. The IR receiver must be removed before the trailer is going to the painter and I must be able to place it again after it returned.

Hi...

Just a small update. I extended the holder for the IR receiver.

My sound board has an IR transmission for the trailer and it's contructed as a contact thru the kingpin.

The original holder is a bit to small, the IR receiver can only be placed with a piece of double sided tape.

So I took a small piece of tape, removed a bit on one side and soldered it on the holder. Now I have a holder for the cable also and I can fix it correctly.

Hi...

A short update. Because of the fact that the trailer will get the same flickering underfloor light (like a burning fire), it needs its own steering board.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-ea-cee6.jpg

And here it will be placed.

The rear is already cabled and is working as expected. Now the LEDs for the underfloor light must be soldered. After that everything will be assembled and finally tested. If it's working as expected, evrything will be disassembled again and the metal parts will be brought to the painter.

Last step will be the creation of a transport box.

Every one of the up dates takes you a lot closer to a proper looking trailer..

Hi Wayne,

You're right, today the complete assembly will start. The last LEDs were soldered yesterday.

Hi Izzy,

there will be 2 main pieces, the trailer body and the rear part. In addition I will have 2 cover plates for the back lights.

I'll post a photo before the stuff goes to the painter.

Re: Trailer for my Black Devil

Hi...

Many things happened since I wrote last time.

When I finished the trailer, the (powder) painter told me that it will not be possible to powder it, because of part of anodized Aluminium. Nice... Why didn't he tell me such things during my last visit ?:mad::mad:

OK, so I went to another (wet) painter. Last time he told me he would paint it for 60EUR. After a short look he started...

"Hmmm... - Must be sanded and cleaned, primed, painted, etc... One hour costs about 140EUR NET, minimum 180EUR ... Plus VAT..."...

I could feel that he really didn't want to have the job...

Grrrrrr..........

OK, back home... Two alternatives...
1. Paint it by hand.... No really good idea... I'm not a good painter and I do not really have a place to paint and to let it dry...
2. Replace all anodized parts by blank Alu... But that are nearly all parts...

:(:(:(

OK, alternative 2 has won...

The last 2 weeks I started to rebuild the complete rear part, exchanged the body profiles and replaced the load floor. In the mqntime, it's no modification of an existing trailer, it's a complete new rebuild...

I also took the chace to modify the rear part. The last version had the disadvantage, that the small LED holders also held the traverses. But that would mean that they must stay in there during painting, but they should not be painted.

Now the traverses are hold be screws and the bulb holders are in between the middle and lower traverse. The left will be the backdrive light and the right one will be the fog backlight.

After all was done I disassembled all parts and started to sand and to clean them. Finally I got this puzzle to solve again:

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-ef-e8c0.jpg

Yippiee, let's get ready to rumble...

BTW: It's a very nice job to work with small screws wearing latex gloves to avoid dabs...

But after some hours I got this final result...

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-ee-b337.jpg

Today I went to another powder painter and he promised to paint it until Thursday...

Let's wait and see...

Now I have to solder theLEDs and I also have to build a carrier box for it, Friday the Truck and the Trailer will go to a fair....

I'll post some photos...

Re: Trailer for my Black Devil

Hi...

It's nearly done, It's working, but I have some effects while the bearers (??? correct ???) are moved up and down. The lights are flickering. It seems an electricmagnetic induction into the IR reciever cable, it's lying above the bearer motor. I hope to fix it with some ferrit cores.

The cargo area need some painting, the wood stain is already bought.

But now let's have a look at some pictures.
