Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi guys ... this is going to be one of those threads that will only occasionally get updated when I find the time to work on the kit.

I ordered this truck about a year ago, it arrived begin September 2014 ... I was still messing around with the build of the Fumotec Komatsu 490 Fumotec Komatsu 490

It took rather long from ordering to shipping because I wanted it with the Arocs cabin so had to wait for some of the bits and pieces to be in stock. Elected to wait till they could send all the bits and pieces in one go to avoid extra shipping costs.

Inside the usual wooden box ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psp0fsg0dl.jpg

And that was it ...After I checked the contents these 2 boxes been sitting around ever since. Let's just say that life got in the way.

So this week, I finally started.

Here some pics of the contents of the boxes;

And the rear body - I ordered it with the "Baustof Mulde"

Have made a start on the assembly of the frame. Will upload some pics later this week. Must say, very very impressed with the fit and finish. Seriously WOW. Do wish I had smaller fingers though :)

I dare say good eye sight and a steady hand too...

I'm sure you will have fun!

I do with my Arocs and MAN from ScaleArt...

Thanks apfubar! So right about the eyesight and the steady hand! :)

===========

Been raining all day here, so had time to upload the pictures of the frame.

Starting out with the easy bit, the strengthening frame bit for the roll on roll off kipper.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2p2aznny.jpg

A bit of a challenge getting the nuts on the bolts

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrtukthxk.jpg

Got it.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1lykctwl.jpg

Bolted in the frame (a bit of counting the holes here, but not as bad as it seems). The holes are really to size, so a quick twist back and forth with a small round file works miracles in inserting the bolts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvqcxb8qk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy5jobzwe.jpg

The other bits that are part of the frame. The one in the red box is the rear cross beam that comes with the kit. I ordered the one (the biggish brass bit) that allows installation of the Rockinger trailer coupling.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psloyzofuw.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl6r7dqwu.jpg

Installing rear cross beam

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmgzebmbi.jpg

Installing some bits from the servo kit while it's easy to get access. The guides for the bowden cable from the differential lock, the servo holder for the diff lock, and the rear bits that will hold the sub frame and the rear bumper.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszdmwtzri.jpg

So, after about 2 hours ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ht591zr.jpg

The holders for the bowden cable are marked out.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psj2zyvh8s.jpg

The servo mount for the differential lock, nicely made so the servo sits straight in the frame.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskottjrah.jpg

A bit confusing really, I got a manual for the MAN TGS which is slightly different from how the MB Arocs goes together. For the rest, the fit of the pieces is perfect and plenty of spare screws with it. Mentioning screws, I still need to cut the bolts to size. Haven't done that yet because I'm still trial fitting the pieces at the moment and might take everything apart again to paint before re-assembling.

Will email Scaleart to see if they got around to update the manual by now.

Next instalment tomorrow weather and time permitting.

Cheers, Stephan

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Does the manual actually say to use longer bolts and then cut them to length? This is one of Wedico's complaints that we don't follow instructions about using the exact bolt size when putting the kits together causing problems after assembly.

Rakthi 05-02-2015 09:53 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Yup, the manual gives which size to use where. They provide a bunch of M1.6 bolts and nuts which need to be broken off to size. As far as I can tell most of the these black M1.6 bolts are used for the frame. Further down in the assembly they provide lots of different sizes and lengths.

Here a picture of the manual - you can see the numbers on the technical drawing in the first picture of my previous post:

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Thanks for the pic of the instructions. It actually does make sense for them to do this as it would be cheaper to buy 1 size of bolt and let the consumer size the bolt after it is installed.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Started on the subframe that will hold the mechanics for the hook lift mechanism.

These are the bits and pieces in that assembly unit:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps19tfjfxv.jpg

Upon opening, lots of little bags with various nuts and bolts ... (most of those for use in assembling the actual mechanism)

Also some pieces that are not needed, the black bit for example is for the exhaust of the MAN truck., and of the 2 frames on the left, the bottom one is for the long bodied MAN TGX.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1fchwxua.jpg

Starting to put it all together. Manual specifies 2 different kinds of screws.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2pxbhq2g.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxu8fv5cc.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqaax2l4g.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3iy2bex5.jpg

Attaching subframe to the main frame

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psc1bnbrru.jpg

At the front we need to get pieces from another assembly unit, the fender supports.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psn3sqtnyr.jpg

After some rummaging in the box here are the bits needed for the front fender.
The supports come in 2 different lengths to offset the widening of the frame.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfkve0sz.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskuawucf1.jpg

Sidenote - to get the loctite on, I found these dental things priceless. Got them on ebay. one can bend them and they are thin enough to get into thigh spaces. Easy to apply the stuff inside the metal rod and avoid the mess you get when applying to the screw.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psknaloakc.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjz2zhifl.jpg

Front fender support installed

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfgxdefhz.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdgnl5886.jpg

The rear support of the front fender installed

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgpou7qf0.jpg

Was going to do the rear fender supports, but here the difference between the AROCS and the TGS becomes obvious ... Totally different arrangement.

From the TGS Manual:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psplva4rdn.jpg

From the AROCS file I was send by Scaleart:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg9eejzwm.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspytjmhco.jpg

Looks like the AROCS fenders set a bit deeper than those from the MAN TGS. Also will need to install some suspension parts before I can install the fender supports. Will also need to take some parts off to do that.

I better go find some more containers to keep all the needed fasteners and washers of the different assembly units organised.

Well here the photos of the current stand of the build:

Thanks for posting lots of pics. It's always nice to see the big parts but it's nice to see all the little parts being assembled into one big part. Looks good!!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Cooper, glad you like it. Since I take the pictures anyway for future reference, might as well post them here. This also gives me a chance to go over what I did and catch mistakes before I get too far ahead.

Already found out I have to work more organised than I'm used to on this build.

Cheers!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Talking about mistakes ... forgot to install this part! Was not on the AROCS drawings I got, but is needed anyway because it holds the bumper stops for the hook mechanism.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgfgeaeje.jpg

Had to remove the sub frame to be able to install it. Too frustrating trying to get the bolt in there with sub frame attached to the main frame. Instructions call for M2 x 8 philips ... seems a bit long to me, but can always file it down later.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8iaykt0q.jpg

Good thing I caught in now. Here it is in place:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7cxofd54.jpg

And the lot back together again. You can see how the narrowing main frame made it practically impossible to install it unless one has infinitive patience.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Started on the supports for the rear fenders.

These need to be attached to their supports. There are 2 longer ones. According to the paperwork included, they are supposed to go on the back ... considering the 2 rear ones mount on top of other assemblies, decided to put the 2 longer ones on the front. If I'm wrong I can always change them out later.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstvitejtj.jpg

They are screwed on with loctite, and the hole in them has to be straight up because it is for a screw that will be inserted later to hold the fender in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psboyrb4io.jpg

Rear one needed to undo the screws already in place and add another one.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuxpdh3oi.jpg

Good thing I haven't cut the screws down to size yet.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspyte6g7s.jpg

The middle one mounts on top of the leaf spring support. Manual states to use M2x6 screws.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvoopj0we.jpg

Looks like M2x6 is not going to do it though. Barely long enough to show. Well this is what happens if you order something before the official release. Am sure Scaleart has rectified this by now.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszef1i3qt.jpg

This is where I left it for now. Have to see if I have 8 M2x8 screws around somewhere. Might replace them with some M2x8 bolts I had ordered extra for an other project.

Cheers,

Stephan

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Took me a bit to locate the spare M2s. Turned out to be M2x10, so shortened them a bit, and then ready to go for what I thought would be a simple exercise ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psichpm98o.jpg

Because I now use longer bolts ... the bolts holding the strengthening frame together are blocking access to the holes in the frame. No way can I get the bolts in the hole. Believe me I tried.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8k4zysiz.jpg

So couple of choice expletives, and after trying to cut them in situ - witch didn't work at all, due to no access/leverage - the solution I came up with was to get them out one by one, cut them, and with a some more colourful language, put them back in. Worked for 3 of them, the fourth one was damaged so too hard to get out. Might have a go at it later.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjq5gp7sp.jpg

After some fumbling decided the easiest (or better less difficult) way would be to just insert all 4 bolts and then take it from there.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshviw94ox.jpg

Here it is in place bolted up with loctite. The nut with the arrow pointing to it is the one that has to go on first as it is so close to the fender support you can not get the tool on it. The hole for it is actually a slot so one has some leeway moving the part a bit back and forth. A 3mm wrench is highly recommended to tighten this one.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psoeykkm0l.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdktynz8b.jpg

The other side went a tad easier. Had some practice.

Then on to the front support of the rear fenders. On the left this one goes on top of the supports of the box that will hold the hydraulic valves. Also needs to take out the bolts of the centre cross beam

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9ai90ep8.jpg

Here supports box and fender loosely assembled

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshndjjd5g.jpg

Final assembly (another fumble job, but not too bad)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjfcdwvzg.jpg

The right side was easy peasy after all this

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdvei4mva.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshyndh4e0.jpg

Well that is it, had hoped to be a bit further along, but it was not to be.

Cheers!

Stephan

Thank you Brel!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next up is the supports for the rear lights.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2l1heyjm.jpg

Tight fit indeed.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspubtukkm.jpg

On the left side I had to loosen the bolts from the fender support to get a little leeway.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2kjlpder.jpg

Installed. Still needs the part to attach the license plate.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfic9leda.jpg

Next, the rear bumper bar. (comes as part of the hook mechanism)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstqnmvtqk.jpg

Can be installed high ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgxcvemdw.jpg

Or low. Installed it low because I will install the rocking tow bit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psz1bjqoqn.jpg

Having a little 2.5 socket key to hold the bolt while setting the nut is handy here.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslwanuhlw.jpg

Bumper bar in. (put some loctite on it)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5clfcrk1.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0dsxoluk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psh9mzcnet.jpg

That's all I had time for. I also shortened the 4th nut from the strengthening frame. One of the reasons of the order this is bolted together is to get the frame to the state where it can be painted. Hence the parts from different assembly units.

Cheers!

Stephan

The leaf spring assembly for both front axles. The 2 parts in the red box replace the regular spacers, one on the left inside of the first axle and one on the right inside of the second axle

The first axle left side, parts laid in order of assembly. I wiggled them out using the tweezers.

The points where they attached to the frame are sharp. I elected to sand them off to smoothen them.

All the parts for this assembly unit sorted out. (The 2 30mm long screws and the black block at the bottom come from the axle package. Not included with the suspension assembly)

Thank you for the compliment Truckmaker! At this moment it looks like it will take a bit before it actually looks like a truck. ;) - at the end of this update I'm only at page 10! Still plenty work left.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After the front suspension, time to do the rear one.

These are the bits:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshyhzfyuw.jpg

And here ready for assembling - the black end has an indent to accommodate the head of the centre screw.

Top and bottom view

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psanrhtz46.jpg

These will not be bolted to the frame at the moment. They'll have to wait till page 17.

The front suspension is the next assembly step.

Here the right side sorted with all the parts needed.

Right side installed ...

Leafspring of the 2nd axle. (no hole needed here due to the distance block)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyntqvgc2.jpg

Both sides fitted to the frame. On the right side the cross headed screw has to be reversed (head on the outside) to allow the steering mechanism to fit.

Thanks Stephan for the way your doing this thread blow by blow I didn't realize how much work had to go into a Scale Art truck.
Do you have a pic of the tools your using to assemble this rig ?

Cheers Tracy

Rakthi 05-10-2015 04:57 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Tracy, yup, lots of bits and pieces go into one of these trucks. Taking the pictures the way I do, makes me stop and think through the assembling part twice or trice before I actually start. And then I still make mistakes like putting the leafsprings on upside down ... Even with the instructions it is confusing from time to time.

I know Scaleart is expensive, but if you see the quality and fit of the parts, it's worth the money spend. (although I do wish it was cheaper)

As for tools I use ..

I got a set of Knupfer wrenches. They are laser cut and exact. Only wished they were a bit longer. Had my sister who lives in Germany send them over. Lots of interesting stuff on his site too. I guess he will ship outside Europe if asked.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5w1xqddu.jpg

This set I found on ebay, not as nicely made. These are roughly finished and not too exact but they are good to hold a nut in place when your fingers can't reach. For size/finish comparison, the 4mm Knupfer one is 4.5 cm and the 4 mm in this set is 10 cm.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1zhxk7jm.jpg

And this box has come in very handy indeed. Picked this up a while ago. It's a box for smart phone / tablet repair. Brand is Huijiaqi 8921. (I've seen them online for about US$15 - 16 ) Actually good quality for the money.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfelyjyuu.jpg

The handle has a magnet in it, so it holds the nuts/screws in place, has different length options, you can use the bits without handle (handy in tight places) and the nicest feature is the bendable extension.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshpmbtsbm.jpg

Then the usual array of (ball)hex drivers, philips and flat screwdrivers etc. too many to picture. I try not to go to hardware stores too much, always end up buying something or the other. The grey ones are included when you buy from Scaleart.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psin5wimtl.jpg

And for the rest, a Dremel is nice, lots of tweezers to pick up little parts, mini pliers etc etc ... And for this build, lots of little plastic containers to keep the assembly units together ...

As you can see ... I'm bored today ...

Cheers!

Stephan

Hi Ap,

Yup so right about how time consuming it all is, time flies if one is having fun! Been "making" too much time for it actually ... have to catch up on some house maintenance first.

On a side note, just noticed that I put this right fender support on the left side of the frame and the left one on the right side ... of course it has to be the one that was such a pain to install.

Need to assemble a few more bits and then the frame is ready for painting. Although, might skip the painting, am not too good at that.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Raining here, so got some time to add some more.

Installed a small part of the steering linkage as mentioned in the instructions.

Because it has wide holes and can be slid left - right, I installed the actual parts that will connect to it, to make sure I got it in the right spot. (Largest screw goes in top hole)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbh4bxs8x.jpg

With the parts in place, and the 2 screws inserted.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxwk11uof.jpg

Installed and loctite applied.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg2tcngp3.jpg

That part done, on to the side underrun protection (a legal requirement in Europe) that needs to be painted as well. However can not be bolted on frame as of yet.

This seems a simple small assembly unit, so I give you a full rundown on how it comes.

Nicely packaged

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjfbh0h2e.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psd2o6nv3n.jpg

Some extra nuts and bolts included, however the ones in the red box are on the parts list, but do not appear on the assembly list ??? Odd.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psekbxdgyq.jpg

How it goes together. (another one where one needs be careful as it needs 2 left and 2 right ones)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9vnpeko1.jpg

The holes in the aluminium support bracket were a tad tight. So reamed them out a bit. Not really needed, but easier to insert the little bolts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshtm3oemu.jpg

One right one assembled ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psofjkingh.jpg

Since I wanted to know how the actually bars go on, I looked at the instructions ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjf8bwqce.jpg

So I am to put a bolt through that hole? The bolt head of the other one is blocking access.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshqsch4fk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyelgxfg2.jpg

So looks like after paint, the little support will have to come off and the bar bolted on first, then the whole thing can be bolted back to the support bracket ... I tried it, and it does work that way -- if you have 3 hands :)

Cheers,

Stephan

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Been thinking about the above "problem" with the bolts blocking one another.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pst2swwbqq.jpg

So did a search on the German forums, where there is more than one thread detailing how these trucks go together, and found the solution in one the older threads from Christian (aka Newcomer_2). Just file the head of one of the bolts down.

And problem solved ... just have to file down 7 more. (Dremel to the rescue)

Well, turns out not odd at all ... those screws are for a different model truck.

Now bolting on the last parts to the frame to get into "paint ready" mode.

These are the parts from the locking/swivel mechanism that will hold the cabin to the frame. I will picture them in the order they went on. The locations on the frame is self evident due to the placing of the holes. Just very confusing as all parts have different sizes of bolts.

Here M2x4

M2x6 and M2x10

All in all not too difficult to assemble, but gave me some eyestrain figuring out what goes where. Too much information in the technical drawings.

Now we wait for decent weather so I can paint, or I just skip the painting all together, too worried I mess it up. Will see. Meanwhile I look and see what other things can be done.

Cheers!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Realised I also need to paint the air tanks. So did a quick assembly on that small unit. Good thing too, because doing so pointed out an error I made in the previous post.

Here a pic of the unit;

Screws are M2x4 and M2x8 and M2 nuts. One extra of each fastener.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl6cww2hu.jpg

The little stainless spacer is to make up for the stainless holder to which the fender support is attached.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psntqr5kqu.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfkcrjwyf.jpg

And here the error I made before. I bolted the fender support to the wrong side of the stainless holder! Aluminum piece supposed to go in front, not behind!

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psumymdd4f.jpg

Corrected ... And now easy to see why the little spacer is needed.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1pskrk4d.jpg

And this is how the air tanks will attach later on.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjioekea2.jpg

Side note - on the front support for the cab are 2 pieces. The left side on has an attachment for the steering linkage, the right side one doesn't.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjhlrrpbu.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfu4wsliz.jpg

That's it for now.

Cheers - Stephan

thanks for taking the time to put up this build thread....really interesting to see, I now understand why Tamiya is just $ but ScaleArt is $$$$$ :jaw:

wierd that you have to cut off all the bolts to get them down to the right length...

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Ricm, glad you like it. Once I got the frame painted we will get to the more interesting bits that might be a tad challenging for me.

Indeed you get value for the money (at least I feel so) and the customer service at ScaleArt is top too.

The screws that need shortening ... someone on the German forum brought up the following: ScaleArt has 5 different truck lines, in different lengths and number of axles. Then the MAN alone has 5 different cabs too .. so somewhere this becomes a logistic problem keeping in mind that each truck is about three- to five thousand parts (fasteners included). So they try to streamline as much as possible and you see the same bits show up in the different trucks. Now if they would have to supply the right size bolts with each frame ... would just add a tremendously amount of work to their supply chain.

Also having the 1.6M bolts this length makes is easier to get them into the holes in the frame, and breaking them off is easy enough. Having to sort out the different sizes of nuts and bolts in the more complicated assembly units is already head ache inducing.

The further along I get with this kit, the more respect I have for the guys at ScaleArt who put it all together. On top of that, seeing what some of the members here build from scratch ...

This morning, clear sky, sun ... so decided to give the painting a shot.

Hung the bits up on a nylon string in the sun to warm up the metal. Paint I used is a local brand of high temperature paint. Only one I could find that was not gloss. Bit hard to see all the small bits with the plants in the background. (The fencing looks the way it does because it is meant to keep our cats in)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslsbv1fru.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pst1ayitpf.jpg

Could have done better, but all in all very pleased with the result. Being black it will be easy to touch up later. I also remembered to do the hydraulic cylinders at the last moment.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskjieh8aw.jpg

Glad that this part is out of the way.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Today I bolted on the Rockinger Trailer Coupling. Easy I thought ... only took about 2 hours. (got a bit carried away with pictures here too)

Because there was only €26 (without tax) difference between the manual and the remote controlled one, I decided to go for the radio controlled one.

What is in the red square is the manual version, the rest is with the radio controlled one.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjzjvgbo4.jpg

This coupling is truly a masterpiece. Here some pictures

Left side

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg1jrhoen.jpg

Right side - closed

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8idj1uxw.jpg

Right side - open (closes automatically when the tongue of the trailer hits the back part - manually with the little lever at the bottom)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspgvdts4d.jpg

Here a link to a short movie I found on YouTube that shows this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyJbYVeywP0

Bottom - the spring allows movement to the left and right (no movement when coupling is open)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssydlaaay.jpg

Top

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps78gl6lkg.jpg

Front

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8rzazgh8.jpg

Back

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psao4cqfnp.jpg

So unpacked the lot and all I really needed was the 2 black bits with the arrow pointing to it, the cable and the servo. The rest are for every possible truck ScaleART produces. So lots of spare screws, washers etc.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscwiz3ktn.jpg

To get the little black lever on, one needs to remove the big stainless one.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psysyc26cg.jpg

This was not as easy as it sounds, but a bit of scrap rubber to protect the polished metal and pliers took care of it.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psalwkfylp.jpg

The black lever pressed in place (used a box driver) on the square protrusion. Looks like a grub screw is needed to hold the cable in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyxfnzk4w.jpg

Found in the bag with fasteners.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmn7aetxh.jpg

Next the servo support goes in the back cross member of the frame

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszpmewxih.jpg

The holes in the trailer coupling have thread in them. Elected not to drill it out. So first screw in the 4 screws.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmzvruiez.jpg

Then loosen each screw in turn and offer up the M2 nut with tweezers (no other way to get to that area)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnsnwjcnj.jpg

Then screw the screw back in whilst holding the nut with the tweezers, and tighten nut with 3mm spanner. Loctite applied.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psoa1yvpih.jpg

Next up, prepping the servo and servo horn. Temporary attach the cable. I cut the rubber supports in half and filed off a couple of mm of the copper bushings that go in the rubber. I felt that otherwise the servo might sit too high. Can always change this again at a later date.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslv0yv4g7.jpg

Servo bolted in place and cable trimmed to right size. A blob a glue added to where I cut the cable to prevent fraying. The servo horn is just loosely attached for the moment. I still need to centre the servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps61ka4pws.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskwbtzd0c.jpg

Cheers!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Next up is the installation of the hydraulic lift arm.

Here an overview of most of the parts needed for this set - just finding all the bits and pieces was a job in itself :)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9vyhnetl.jpg

First we prep the hydraulic cylinder

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psipb7at72.jpg

The nipples are screwed on, and although the manual does not ask for it, I added some thread sealant. Better safe than sorry.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxc9tzipl.jpg

Then temporary mount the cylinder to the hydraulic valve box. Temporary so we can determine the length of the hydraulic hose we need. Would be a real "joy" to have to install this after everything is bolted up.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslh20fd7p.jpg

Installed. I put the longer pin in the picture because the short one is the wrong one.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnx2gs6f6.jpg

Mounted the valve body in the box to check length hose.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psai5ui9sf.jpg

The hoses for this cylinder will attach to the area pointed out with the arrows. The 2 circled holes are the in and return line for the oil. There's been a small error in packing and the 4 mm nipples were omitted. ScaleART already informed me they will ship them ASAP .. still will probably take 4 weeks to get here.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslygga6zp.jpg

Hose length determined and cut to size, attached it to the nipple. First slide on the hose and then press the sleeve home.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjuj4xtcc.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspx19hm1q.jpg

Next is the connecting rod. (it mounts the other way around from how shown)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psb9iyblcf.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvn2ryweg.jpg

Then the actual kicker, that will have to slide over the rod when we install it in its proper position. (The kicker has to be horizontal when cylinder is completely out.)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psydkrvoes.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psd3txwfyl.jpg

Then slide the assembly into the frame through the holes provided in the sub frame. (had to ream out the holes a bit due to the paint that got in)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4j6vvmt8.jpg

The valve box needs to be attached with 4 M2x5 screws to the box holders on the frame ... one of them is a absolute pain due to no room at all.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9qixfvbi.jpg

Here all installed (including above nut and screw) seen from the left. I also installed the 2 rubber bumpers.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psabs2j48d.jpg

Here from the left. Rod that holds the kicker is secured with an M3.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrxvetzv7.jpg

Last part was bolting the diamond plate cover to the valve box cover.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswir37u1y.jpg

That's it for now. Cheers!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

The rear lights are on the program next. (the orange of the indicators has to be painted in - used Tamiya X-26 for that)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psthcvgrqd.jpg

I ordered the kit with the KingBus system, so I only have two cable on each light. The cable is supposed to go in the inside of the frame, however a slight problem:

This little plug

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psird8ybiu.jpg

Does not fit in the round hole, more so because the lower rear crossbeam sits further back and blocks part of it.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgzsm5n7l.jpg

The plug does reminds me of the ones I had on my motorbike. And those would come apart with some fiddling.

Took me a bit, but if you get a needle you can lift up the little plastic tabs and pull out the cables ... not a fun job the first time around, but easier if you lift the tab from the top between the 2 tabs.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmkdnujou.jpg

Bare cables. They only go one way back into the plug. The little edge pointed out by the arrow is what holds them in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pst8oyumat.jpg

This sorted, next we have to cut a small channel in the plastic body of the light fixture. This to accommodate the cable.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshfokuxlj.jpg

Need to carefully smoothen the edges of the LED board so it fits into the housing. (I used 800 grit paper for this)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqwikgr9x.jpg

Now fits nice and flush in the housing

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psabuhz5gz.jpg

Added some heat shrink over the wires and cut an insulator from an old inner tube. (there was supposed to be one with the LED board but didn't see it)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrlsiwfxg.jpg

Fed the wire through the hole into the frame - had to take the servo out to make it easier - and in hindsight made my life difficult due to being so focussed on getting the wire in the frame ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psh551ib89.jpg

Tried to fasten the M2x5 screw indicated in the manual, but it didn't fit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbtnkteze.jpg

The holes provided are for M1.6 screws, so changed to those.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshk8n9kx5.jpg

Light fixture installed

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrcawqjww.jpg

Plug back in place

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdhnhe1ko.jpg

Servo back in place and lenses glued in place with 2 component transparent glue.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqfeisqap.jpg

Cables tucked in the frame for now

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvcpq8qug.jpg

And here a pic without the clamp

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1yqzhxnj.jpg

If I had to do this again, i would first fix the light to the support, then add the heat shrink and feed it in the frame. Oh well ...

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Some more parts that need be bolted to the frame before starting on the drivetrain.

First, the housing for the servo diff lock front axles. The manual indicated 5 M2x5 but only need 3.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pss4tnhwpf.jpg

This is another one of this little gems that make you realise how much thought and care goes into these models. Even for a part that you don't really see once the truck is build. (Yup I can get carried away by things like this)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshrxkk8o4.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psiz0vjdpo.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6o1s4sge.jpg

Goes here, right behind the cab.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmuyjhmwo.jpg

Neat fit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2ibow0lo.jpg

Looks like I better bolt that bit from the cabin fender on before I install the servo. :)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2ibow0lo.jpg

Upside down view from the back.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszlwvbwzn.jpg

Next are the supports for the oil pump and tank.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psofn2pz39.jpg

Goes here, which is kind of a problem because on the left, there are bolts from the middle cross beam ... I should have paid more attention to that section.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrv9xaz1f.jpg

They came out easer than I thought.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psruozreng.jpg

And tank supports installed ... the left bottom screw took me more than 20 minutes to get into the hole. Almost no access with the valve box and kicker mechanism in place ... There is a reason you're supposed to install it way earlier in the game.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswyeibfxd.jpg

I put the tank in place. You can see that the supports are not really symmetrical.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxusqhetz.jpg

Reason why the supports are not evenly spaced is the outlet from the pump. That bolt will be replaced by a nipple with a 4mm oil line attached, so you need some room.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psh6bj9rb9.jpg

Looking from the back it seems I could get away with moving that support one hole closer to the front.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswoctxt1j.jpg

Cheers, Stephan

This is just an amazing model. I really enjoy my Capo kits for their amount of detail and realism, but this... Crazy scale. I wish Scale art would make something in a true 1:10 scale cause I would be sold instantly.
Couple questions, if you don't mind me asking, how much did this kit set you back? And what scale is it? Seems fairly small, 1:16?

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Prop,

The scale of this truck is 14.5, as for how much I paid, € 6143.29 for the truck and € 470 shipping via UPS (that includes the €25 for the prep of the custom forms). That does not include the Rockinger stuff, I got that in a separate order. I think that one comes to €225.00 or so. Because I am from Europe I still have an account there, so no need for me to convert. With the Euro dropping in value it is a good time to buy if you hold other currency.

If you register with ScaleART, you get all the prices without taxes.

I'm lucky to live in a "free port" meaning no import duties etc. No idea what the duty would be on this for you.

Talking about Capo, I have their 8x8 truck too. Was a nice kit to put together. But this new 4x4 you are bolting together sure looks like it is a step up for Capo. Also very realistic. Can't wait to see some pictures of the engine that hides the electrical motor.

Since I have an excavator in 14.5 scale, it kind of makes sense for me to have this truck in that scale too. And as you pointed out, the detail in this truck is unbelievable. Really a joy to assemble.

Yikes. Maybe its a good thing they dont have a 1:10 scale offering. I'd be in trouble if they did! Thats more then 2 Capo 8x8's! I skipped building the engine first to wait for servos, its the first thing in the manual. But im going to be starting it soon. It's very impressive I must say. Theres deffinitely nothing else on the market that looks and functions like the real thing as this Capo v8. At least that I have seen. Question for you, have you bought anything from AFV-Model? Loving this build, I'll be following it to the end.

Hi Prop, I've seen some small teaser pics of that V8 on their website. Looks way better detailed than the one in the Tatra. Well will patiently wait until you get to it :). As for the price of he ScaleArt ... what to say ... is indeed $$$ but I don't regret having spend it. Does mean though that the new 4x4 Capo will not happen here. Can't have everything. The AFV-Model site is in my bookmarks for some nice bits, but haven't ordered from them yet. From what I get from the German guys they are pretty reliable. I've ordered stuff from these guys: cmc-versand a couple of times. The trouble is that sometimes the shipping cost is more than the product one wants/needs.

To chime in, I have bought some stuff from AFV... Reliable and easy to deal with...

I bought their oscillating fifth wheel, and in another order some detail kits for a Tamiya Tank...
