1930s dumptruck - Nylint
 

I'd ordered a WPL B1, "1/16 scale" M35 truck kit. It's small. Quick search and sloppy measurement, it appears to be 1/17.5 or 1/18 scale, and looks like a minitruck next to the cars.

I had gotten this 'Nylint Classics' 'metal muscle' truck from my grandma for a birthday some time in the 1990s. They had atleast 5 trucks in the series: Dump, Stakebed, Tow, Fire pumper, Fire ladder.

I shortened up the wheelbase a little, trimmed the frame length some.
Then i put the fixed end of the leafsprings at the outside, and went spring-under axle. Trimmed the bumper off the rear crossmember, and pulled the trans out for now.

Then some internal body trimming, and a little chassis crossmember clearancing. Which got me to this point.

Haha fantastic work frizz. I ordered 2 of those but seller was a scammer. Got my money back thanks to ebay. Glad i didnt get them now but its perfect for that truck!

As a 1/18 truck, the B1 is pretty good, but not stellar. As a 1/16 that will play around with 1/14, 1/12 scale...it's a donor.

There are no bearings, there are no differentials. All gears are plastic, looks probably nylon but i don't know. Driveshafts are plastic and the yokes don't inspire confidence. It's very toygrade. It's not a rock crawler with bulletproof drivetrain. These aren't tamiya semis you can let a kid ride on the trailer. But it can give cheap axles to get smaller vehicles moving. The 3D printer guys are going crazy and cranking out new parts weekly.

Anyway, i've always been impressed with the old trucks with how tiny of running gear they had, and just how capible they were. Plus this was the dumptruck i actually wanted to build first, the Structo was made since it was cool and fit the donor axles. I'm not planning on this being a primary dumptruck, but more of the company owners 'Restored Toy' that helped build the company and the owner takes out occasionally to do trade shows, events, and light jobs for fun in nice weather.

I need to make some more leaf springs, i've got single in front, doubled in back. It's still a little spongier than i'd like. I don't need to aim for huge capacity, the trucks only going to carry maybe 1-3 dragline scoops.

There's also a guy on the 'other' board building one of these WPL trucks into a (tamiya lunchbox) Dodge Tradesman, which i think would be fun to do as a 70s 'Vanning' custom. It's a decent little donor if you keep it reasonable.

I haven't had a chance to get mine together yet. I'm sad to hear they are a lil small scale wise. I am however glad you were able to put er to good use by thinking outside the box, as you're so good at doing. That lil dumper looks absolutely AMAZING!

I know 4wd wasn't much of a common thing until after WW2, but there were some aftermarket companies doing it, so i'm not sure which way i'll go.

Servo height sitting on top of mount is pretty good, doesn't need the mount slot, i couldn't dig out the support matrix anyway. Dimentions and everything above clear the body great.

I quickly realized when i spec flat bottom on mk 2, i forgot about servo arm swing, and diff pumpkin clearance. I'll get it pulled back out and send pics and cutouts.

I made servo drag link out of copper again, ran to right tire which clears better and to minimize any bumpsteer through my "massive articulation". This is temporary, unless it works.

Very nice work on the servo mount design. Looking forward to see the final iteration. Do you have any plans for building something with the new WPL 6x6 chassis?

I'm just glad that I'm getting help from igotit over on scale, and my friend with the printer.

I don't have plans yet. I've got several things already in work i'd like to finish first. If i do get the 6x6, it's probably going to be an M35A2 as scale and detailed as i could make it. It's small to play with Tamiya semis, but looks really cool.

I figured out a mid body mount using a plastic strip and screw into an existing rivet hole. So the frame sockets onto the bumper extention, lays into the body watching crossmember location, then raise the plastic strip and rotate it across frame. Good enough.

Yes it pulled the Unit Crane. This one time. No it wasn't safe. It took ALL the truck had to pull the crane, motor smells hot. Only my 4wd Structo will be used to move the little Unit.

I'm kinda going for a Truck that started the business when new, they moved on, it came out of storage for a restoration, and sometimes gets lightly used more as a retired toy than a working truck

Due to the small bed and soft springs, it won't really 'Ride like a Dumptruck' and the little Figrelli / Actuonix bed actuator i got that didn't work for the bigger truck seems like it can pretty easily handle things on here.

Its able to dump a 12 oz beverage can. I think that should be about right for a load of dirt or crumb rubber. It doesn't have a tailgate so it's not like it'll get filled to Struck or Heaped.

I'll probably still add to the suspension limit. A little over a 12oz can in the bed is about where its either still up, or squats the shackles to the stop. If i upgrade, i'll probably just try to break some toy spring-motors to make some extra leafs.

Somewhere along the way this also got a leafspring upgrade with aluminum drops & shackles, and added more leafs cut from stock slider springs.
I also bumped it up to a newer gearbox with 180 motor.
