Sounds like a plan.
You need to change the motors though for some 12v scalextric ones, the standard ones are only rated for 3v i think.

Most people use the tamiya twin motor gearbox for the drive, although the plastic gears can be a bit fragile and the motors really need changing to 12v scalextric type motors, i got...
