Could be the servo, ive have 2 that make my DX7 go nuts but also could be the high current load. Id try another servo (unmounted) to see I had a look but couldnt see how easy it was to access and swap that said its a fair bulk to shift mechanically.
Im guessing $2 part mentioned is the 2905 IC these are limited to ~500mA - not enough for your requirements.
