Workbenches

[TRUCKMAKER]

I built a workbench many years ago and really liked it. I sold it when I didn't need it anymore and didn't have the space for it. Now I'm going to build a new one. I was doing HO and G scale trains when I built the previous bench, now that I'm doing 1/14 scale trucks, I'm trying to decide what height the work surface should be and what depth/width the bench should be. The bench will be against the wall, basically in a corner.

What are you using and what height and depth do you find comfortable for those long building sessions?

I used to be a goldsmith for about 15 years, and for the most comfort jewelers have their benches high,so while sitting,the forearms are resting on the table, it minimizes the shaking.
I still use the same kind of a bench,you can work standing up with out bending down,or sit and have your hands steady. My hands shake crazy, I suffer from tremor syndrome and this kind of set up is indispensable for me.

I agree 100% and Kent you have been to my shop and seen my bench. I hate bending over to work on things. Plus with a higher bench you have good space below for storage.

Thanks for the comments guys, that is a good point about height. My back is messed up as it is and when I get done spending hours at the small bench I'm using now, it really hurts.

I've been using 'office' desks for yrs in my house & I elected to go with the same height in my workshop... which I actually started building today, take pics tomorrow.

Height is 30" & depth 33".

I have two different adjustable height stools that will great for this height. A lot of these construction models I seem to be looking/working down & inside of them, so I think this lower height is the better choice for me.

I think I'll go with 36" deep but still not sure on height. I'll have to do some more measuring.

Like Joe I have been using desk height for years in my shops. That said I sit in an office chair for kits of the work but you can easily look in projects standing. I usually have a bench booster ( box) to lift the surface higher when needed.

Well finally got around to building my new work table. It's 8' x 36" x 31" tall.
The first picture is the table I've been building on and then the new one.
I still need to get some supports for the back side of the peg board and some peg board asessories.

Yeah bought the house from a little old lady, it's in good shape just needs some updates, figured there are more important things to do

The 1st bench of many? cause that bit of space aint gonna stay clutter free for long.

I shake my head at my brother & sisters with their insatiable need to remodel their houses every 7-10yrs... if aint broke why replace it?

I have plans for another 4x8 bench next to this one. I'll use it for my machine tools. The cabinet on the left side in the first picture is 1 of 2 on identical computer tables. Then I have an industrial workbench and a 2 x 4 roll around bench up in the garage. Since I've been building on the little bench in the first picture for about 3 years I think I'll get by for a little while. maybe.
