Hemi
Superb workmanship and really inspirational project. I have question on your homemade cylinders. Do you use a specific steel for the rod, ie precision ground drill rod, or regular steel? Also what type of oring? Silicone? Viton? I really want to try to make a working cylinder for a dozer.

Love the grader - masterpiece!
Best regards,
Bob

Thanks Bob.
For the rods I use 1.4021 stainless steel. I'm using both Nitrile and Viton o-rings.

Great job you are doing here Hemi ! May i ask what type/grade of aluminium you machine ? I want to use 6061-t6 for my project but maybe you have a better alternative ?

I'm mostly using 6061, but I also have some harder aluminium that I have no idea what it is.

I've been working with the circle gear, and I got it almost machined when it came loose off the chuck. I could not tighten the chuck very tight because the circle gear is not very thick. I was taking very moderate cuts and relatively slow speed, but it was not enough
I have to try again, and do the final operation with different mounting method.
Luckily some parts turn out decently.

That's a sad let down! The part looked like it would have been beautiful, before the catastrophe.

Bummer I know the feeling when a part comes out. I've had big parts that I'm getting paid for come out of my setups running the endmill across it making pretty tooth marks every 1/4" because I'm usually climb milling.
On your piece; Could you cast it in some of that Bismuth alloy?
If you don't know what that is, it's a soft lead type metal that melts in hot water.

Thanks guys
I got the centershift cylinder and few brackets done.

On the last pictures you can see some extreme angles of the drawbar.
