farmall 1468 tire removal question

Hi guys, I have a 1/16 ertl precision model of the farmall 1468. The tractor comes with duals, but the axel is bent pretty bad and I cannot figure out how to remove the outer set of tires. Any ideas??

The outer wheels are just pressed on to the axle. Grab the outer wheels and start pulling and twisting at the same time.

I got them to come off, and I am doing away with the duals, now the problem is how to reattach them, where do I get those press on metal caps that keep the axle from sliding out?

Maybe a ring like this would fit:

Look at the picture in the link, http://www.boltproducts.com/tinnerma...c-cap-nut.html I think Lowes has them in there hardware bin's, same kind of cap that holds tricycle wheel's on.

This is incorrect, the duals on the 1466 and 1468 Precision tractors are held on by brass or plastic colletes. You need to remove the center of the dual then drive the collet off of the axle with a small punch. I have done several wheel changes myself.

Sorry but I just pulled the rims off the tractor. I guess I did not know there was a repair manual available for the "correct" way to do it.

They usually won't come off just by pulling, that's all I'm saying. If they have the brass collets they are usually very tight.

Clause, I was able to just pull the wheels off, but I wish I had seen your post before I did it. I now have one damaged outer dual wheel, but I love the way the tractor looks with the silver and red single tires on it. what is your suggestion as to what to use to secure the wheels on now? I can't find cap nuts anywhere, plus they won't look good on the precision tractor anyway. any suggestions?

Contact Dakota Toys (1 605-256-6676), what you want is a tuned axle cap. They are axle caps that are just slightly larger than the 3/16 axle, they give the appearance of the axle sticking out past the wheels. This tractor is Rob Lynch's, he used the caps I speak of on the axles. Also, when you call Dakota Toys buy yourself a catalog.

When I have used them in the past I tapped them on with a small hammer. Another option is dual hubs, gives the appearance the duals are off the tractor, again a pressed fit on the axle. I never liked the look myself but some do, these tractors are Brian Long's work.

just so I am clear, the axle on my 1468 precision is 3/16" correct??? I am now thinking of buying a new one having found the Dakota farm toy page. the reason I took off the duals in the first place was because the axle was bent pretty badly. Sorry if these questions are kind of basic, but I have never done any monkeying around with any of my 1/16 farm toys, kind of seems fun now that I have gotten into it a bit. and the catalog's are still free from what I can see.

3/16" is the most popular but now that you mention it I believe the axle on your tractor is 5/32". See what size drill bit slips through the wheels or the axle housings on your tractor. Should still be able to get the right size turned axle caps. I believe forum member deereboy3020 makes them also.

Craig, I never get tired of seeing your Precision series tractors. I still drool over the custom 1466 and 1468 Internationals. Those are mighty fine models. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and photos.

I recently added axle caps over the molded axles on the large wheels of my 1468, they were turned by Deereboy3020. The 1466 will be getting them soon, and I also bought the 1086 above from Rob Lynch.





The larger tires do make a huge difference.
