You don't see any european guys jumping in joy over the "new" mercedes, actually I don't think I know any truck builders that doesn't rebuild the **** out of the tamiya kits, VERKERK parts, T-bonnet kit for the scanias, and what have you, but as long as freightliner/mercedes are the only company giving license to have their trucks made by tamiya, it's gonna suck big time in the truck model world.

if only PACCAR VOLVO and SCANIA would open up for tamiya, the range of trucks in 1:14 would grow big time

Actually the prototype companies don't have to open up. Tamiya just has to grow a set. When I was model railroading CON-COR came out with an HO JEEP Grand Cheeokee. Daimler-Chrysler refused to license it. CON-COR cleaned off every name plate and marketed the crap out of it as a "Modern Sport Utility Vehicle" their ads even made fun of Chrysler for their refusal and it sold like hot cakes. And they did not get sued! Boeing tried the same crap, companies just started using generic names.

Imagine this new dumper as a R series Mack, an Autocar, Volvo you pick the truck anything just NO EMBLEMS! And they sell it as the "Construction Dump Truck" it can be done. Heck, Tamiya started it with their Globeliner (IH) and King Hauler (KW-Pete) they just don't want to do it.

Sorry gang Rant over!

Just gets frustrating waiting and hoping for US prototype models. Tamiya's last US kit? A King Hauler with a couple new molded trees and longer frame.
Thank goodness for 3d printing!

I think the thing is that to Tamiya, the 1:14 truck range seams to be kind of a 'sideshow'. Their main products are 1:10 RC cars, 1:24 and smalers plastic kits, a much bigger marked than the 1:14. Looking at the development in the 1:14 truck hobby the past 5-10 years, Tamiya have missed out good income possiblilties IMO. In Germany, and elsewhere, there are many small companies these days developing custom parts for the Tamiya kits. It's often relative small series, and high cost products. Wow, if Tamiya cared, with their knowledge and lines for mass production, they could grabbed a big part of this market themselves. But looks like the interest is not quite there. The Mercedes Actros and Arocs models are the most detailed and realistic models by now, and I think it's the German dealer/main dealer of Europe, which have managed to push on Tamiya head office to 'step up' a little. The old 3 speed drivetrain, with the race car motor, come on, SCRAP IT! and put in a up to date compact gearmotor that got a suitable speed! But...probably won't happen, just doing what they've done for 25 years, minimum changes and improvements. Well, great for all the small companies around) That being said, great kits, great finishing of the parts, great building instructions.

The manufacturers could drive this as far as what Tamiya releases. Take Daimler for instance, they own Mercedes, Freightliner, WesternStar and a few others. They have provided Tamiya with drawings for the Actros, Arocs and the Freightliner Cascadia. That’s why these are very detailed. I worked for Daimler when the Cascadia kit was released, they made videos of the completed trucks with trailers running around the headquarters in Portland Or. and offered the kits to employees at 50% off. They all so got with Tower Hobby and put together an easy order list for a radio, charger battery and MFU for the people who wanted one but werent already in the hobby. Before all this was done Tamiya released the Knight Hauler on there own. It’s the original Freightliner Coranado unbadged and the only thing Tamiya changed was the headlights and the shape of the fenders around them, so it can go both ways. The biggest thing is sales they could make all kinds of truck models but it’s a niche market and probably don’t sell as many as you think plus a retail outlet isn’t going to stock very many if any due to there size, takes up space for items that sell more.

What he said.
1. The 1/14 truck market is small compared to the rest of the RC vehicle world.
2. For the rest of the RC vehicle world, most isn't driven toward realism - even the realistic ones that are mass-produced, well, the realism is limited to what is molded into the polycarbonate body. (there are exceptions, of course, but not much in comparison).
3. For those that have been around injection molding - you know how expensive that tooling is, and then to sell a small volume of kits from it?

Ideally, they would create a universal chassis kit, 2-3 old-school wheel kits, and then some limited-run cab kits from soft tooling. 3-D scanning and rapid prototyping now make this more viable than ever - but they'd need to invest manpower to analyze the market and determine what to offer - IMHO that's the biggest hangup.

Injection molding might be expensive, but Chinese companies are catching up and very fast. Heng Long for example, 6 years ago, their 1/16 tanks were crap!, but every year they got better and better, new models are crisp and accurate, some tanks side by side with Tamiya are indistinguishable, top it up with new modern releases of British Challenger,Chinese ZTZ , American Abrams (H.L. released before Tamiya) and OMG! Russian T90 super detailed, remote volume control, sound still a bit generic, but in a couple of years, that will be corrected as well. For about $120 you can order MFU from a Taiwanese company that is tiny compared to Tamiyas and the sound is super sharp and authentic. The upgrade market is huge, metal tracks and body parts, you name it, not speaking about starting price of $220 to about $300 us. For $500 you have a super machine!!! This video is official Heng long release of T90 kit

Tamiya, wake up and smell the profits!!!

Agreed Kaptain, I'd love to see what Heng-Long could do in the R/C truck arena! Their quality has improved greatly from where they began with their tanks. If they would combine Fury Fan's idea of a universal chassis and different old school wheels with their ability to produce good quality cabs on a par with their newer tanks I think they'd find plenty of un-tapped market. AND start to push Tamiya to up their game!
Anyone have a solid contact at Heng Long? Maybe we could plant a seed! Worst they could say is no.

Speaking of Chinese manufacturers. A company called Hercules Hobby released a version of the MBz Actros for $200 US. The model was similar to the Tamiya except for the MBz logos on the truck. At Asiatees You can purchase Hecules trailers and container kits for about $200-300 US.

This company could be the next Tamiya if they up there game, right now the reviews are soft hardware and quality issues but hopefully in time they will improve. We just need them to release some US cabs.

Heng long just recently entered the truck market, in the same scale as tanks 1/16 two RTR army trucks, American and Russian. Still a toy grade, but at $50 battery included, you cant go wrong. Many guys in my tank club already gutted and upgraded some of them.Give it year and we'll see 1/14 or 1/12 scale for sure.

Hercules have been on the marked guess 3-4 years now. I did also think that here comes some real competition for Tamiya. But have not happened. Even the lower pricing, they not been a serious threath, around here in northern Europe at least. Finishing of parts are okay, similar to Tamiya, but not that snugg fit. People still prefere the Tamiya Mercedes's. They have a short 2 axle trailer on the marked, for a 20' container. So short, looks comic) Maybe they improve and step it up in the future, come up with their own designs

Heng long and Hercules Hobby were cloning Tamiya products, I don't consider that competition. It is good to see Heng Long producing their own product now though.
