DAF XF in tamiya scale

I'm building a DAF XF105 in the tamiya scale.
the end result is going to be made of resin. the bennifit of resin casting is that is doens't have to stay just the one cab. in fact the first one is going to be the super space cab. the second one the space cab.
I'm working on this cab on and off for just a year now. and i'll place the picture's and tell about its different stage's .

I started with the drawings found on the DAF website. and scaled them back to the 1 : 13.5 scale needed for the tamiya volvo/scania/man chassis.
the printouts of the drawings were glued to cardboard.

to me a new material, and I wanted to find out if it would work for me.
in this stage it works fine. later on it started to work agains me. so there is not another complely cardboard cab-prototype, in the future.

but as a base it's just fine. and with no hard work and little time. the endresult of the first evening was impressive.

after a short time I got the cab to the point I needed a chassis


af first I made my own chassis with bruder wheels,

but those were fom an unimog and a bit narrow.

with some help for other modelbuilders I got my hands on some spare parts. and I was able to build a tamiya chassis, to have a mule for the cab.

making the side skirts was made easyer to, having the chassis.

with the other kinds of roofs for all the type's that haven gone before





and also the spoilerset was tried.


Thats almoust a year in 2 short story's
Now I'm at the point that the mold for the first parts is made. the second is waiting for the clayair intake to dry enough to be removed and worked at.
so some progress had been made. pictures of that in my next update

I do my best ;-) to make a good looking cab. the frist bits can be cast this evening. But those are just te first 2 parts. the whole cab will be like 45 part or so.

the point where I'm at now.
tha cab is broken down to peices, and getting the last bumps and scratches out.


the flat cab bits make making the molds smaller.

the roofs are not going to be broken down to bits for molding. they are just a bigger bit of the cab.

the next bit to be moled is the backside. the next after that the bumper.

making the mold isn't that hard.
just build a cab.
The first cab I build I used cardboard and plaster. that cab was one solid peice and very heavy. after that I used balsa wood. but I just wasn't really happy with the way it was in the mid of the build. then I found this cardboard. and tried it on this cab. besides this cab I also tried a small daf cab based on cardboard finished with balsawood.
but you cab use any material. I've use candelwax for mirrors.

once you're happy with the parts end result. but it in a box or tray. and pore the silicone over it. just a few thing to notice, make sure the part doesn't float, make sure the part can't deform, make sure the part can come out. those things are mostly done by glueing the part to the base. the last one is airbubles. after poring in the silicone tap the box or tray to get the bubble's out.

but this is a cab that can be cut up to flat parts. if you got a cab that is not able to be cut-up to flats. then there is the tricky job of suspening the cab in a box to cast the inside and outside mold together. then the floating, deforming and getting it out of the mold get harder. even the airbubbles are harder to get out. I have's got a vacuummachine to get the air out. I got a small machine to get air out of bags and seal them. just putting the part and the silicone in a bag doen't work. and I'm now trying to fix a bag to a box so i can get the air out of the box with the bagsealer.

after that it's just waiting for the silicone to set. and opening the tray and get the part out.

and to get a resin part. just mix the resin and pore it in. wait a few minuts and there is the part. and you can pore an otherone and an otherone, and an otherone.

the silicone I use is not the kind that is used to seal the windows an plumbing, but is a mold silicone. I buy it at a store that moustly sells to yachtbuilders and sculpters.
and infact if you build a cab like this you are a sculpter ;-).

I'll try to find pictures of the different stages.

I've fixed the bumper to the chassis.
first I needed to make some room for the bumper and the bit up front needed to go.


so I could put the bumper in the chassis.



and screw it in with the original holes, the screws are mostlikely not original.



wheelclerence is good. not to roomy not to tight

Hi it is not yet possible to buy the cab.
when it's finished there is always a possibilaty. if it is allowed by forum regulations

ok. how long have you come on the cab?

just need to do some parts the grill. the roofs and the dashboard.
I just got side tracked by the introduction of the XF 106/116 ;-)
and I'm nog going to post photo's jet. most parts are the same and I guessed the the new parts right. the grill. bumper and lowerpart of the cab are different.
but I haven't got the butget for molds to al least the end of the year. that's what's keeping me down.

You put a lot of effort in this project. Did you know that the 105 cab for Tamiya is already on the market in Europe?

yes I know there is a real square one from germany. But my project is going to be the complete cablife in the end. from the first 95 from 1987 folowing all the update's to the latest XF 116. ( my guess is there is nog going to be an other one after this. due to new cab dimention laws beeing made now in europe.). I'm even thiking about the parts to make it into the pegaso thoner. or one of the differend brands that used the cab.

and the cab is the same. just the frontaxle is more at front than usual.
and they added some parts used on other kenworth's



and it has been build by kenworth australia. if it's a one of. or an prototype. or a new model maybe the next K200. who knows.

here is the grill cast already.
and of corse it fits the same parts as the xf105. witch I hope it can have its debut too on that show.
