Very nice video!!

You should think about locking one axle.. number 5 for instance!

Cheers

Nice video, Kerst. That block swinging that close to your operator's cab could make him very nervous if he was along for the ride.lol Still ready to see this thing make a lift.

Progress has been slow during the summer.
I mainly worked on many details and little improvements everywhere.
On the upper I added 3 outlets, 2 in the front and one in the back for functions like the telescoping and luffing winch for when the derrick mast is attached.
I also added a couple of switches ( a toggle switch and a 3 position rotary switch) on the upper (2nd picture) to switch between functions. I have only 3 2-pole circuits coming through the slewing ring. This way i can switch between functions.

I spent the past month figuring out the mechanism to extend the 3 boom sections.
It is somehow based on the Liebherr system, one section at the time. I use a spindle, which propels 2 pins, which can hook into the bottom of each section and push it up. The whole assembly can rotate and with 3 positions available I can choose which section to extend. the motor is mounted on the side of the boom where the real one has an oil tank for the same function. Once in place the sections get locked manually.

Very interesting. I confused on the timing of each section though. I see you are using a fast lead screw to advance the sections. Does it have multiple leads? More pictures when you get a chance.

I find it hard to describe in words how it is going to work.
To reach full boom length the last section goes out first, then the one but last and then the second one.
I am using a hi-lead screw (http://www.roton.com/Mating_Componen...family=7060762) with multiple leads just to speed it up a bit. It has to travel about 22" for each section and it will take about 25 - 30 seconds for each. I think one motor will do it, but there is the option to have another motor on the other side (easy to add). This screw has a high efficiency. I tried it by hand and it works very nicely. I chose this screw partly to keep the weight down. An 3/8" acme screw is sooo heavy and has a lower efficiency.

I will make some more pictures later.

What an amazing piece of art. I always find it wonderful to see when somebody can build something like that. Awesome!!

I tried it out and it works quite smoothly, but one motor is not enough, so I added the other motor. Here is a picture of the assembly:

Amazing stuff, Kerst. Serious machinery here, and working in 1/24 scale only makes it that much more impressive. I watched the video. I've always loved the look of the reeving on 1/1 cranes, and yours definately captures the effect! I'm building a crane too, and your engineering skills humble me.

I worked on the boom quite a bit. The telescoping mechanism is ready and I did some detailing, which is almost finished.
Next I will be testing the boom and getting ready for the Cabin Fever Expo in January.
