Scale ratchet straps
They DON'T ratchet, i lied. But they will secure loads wery well with a fair amount of force.
Small paperclip or 18g copper or brass wire Ribbon 3/8" or smaller CA or other glue Solder (optional) This 3/8" ribbon makes a 1/14 scale 5.6" strap, or 1/16 scale 6.4" strap. Make 2 coathangar shapes that the ribbon just passes through with the hook bent 90 deg. Make a very flat digital 8 shape If you want stronger, kiss it with some solder. Toast end of ribbon, then thread ribbon through coathangar, glue end, clamp for a few seconds. Toast other end of ribbon, thread through outside of the 8, glue, clamp. Grab other coathangar, toast ribbon and glue. Then go figure out what length it needs to be, add a couple inches, trim and toast. This way works, but not as well an the explination and pic after it. Point both hooks down, thread ribbon below the 8, and up past center, come back below the leg near the hook. You may have to arch the 8 more to get the grip correct. Pull the free end to tighten, raise the buckle to loosen. Now, go lash something down

Re: Scale ratchet straps
A genius idea, sir! I wish I would have thought of it. I clicked, thinking you were looking to purchase some, & was prepared with link to purchasing site. I'mm all about making things that we can make, rather than lining someone else's pockets with dough.

Re: Scale ratchet straps
I'm far from awesome enough to make decent looking load binders like that!
So here's a 1.5" - 2" ratchet strap that i like better than the 6" wide ones for car size loads. Better straps were of course needed for the boats, so i knocked these together with some yellow nomex 'lacing tape' about 0.080" (2mm) wide, some 0.032" (0.6mm) brass wire, and some CA glue. Making the hooks and buckles wasn't terribly fun, but it's fairly easy.

Re: Scale ratchet straps
They look really good. How much play time can a set of the small ones handle? And how much like threading a needle is it to use them? Should I try to make a couple of them to strap down my ladder?

Re: Scale ratchet straps
Frizzy, THANKS for the Inspiration!
I tried your strap method, but I was having trouble getting the proper spacing with bending the wire. I wanted straps, so I came about a different way of making them pesky buckles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKLXH47w7ls&t=34s |

Re: Scale ratchet straps
Wombii, i'm honestly not sure how rugged or durable they are. It's a little fiddley using the small straps, but it's not threading the needle unless you make the hole too small. If it's difficult you could stiffen part of the strap with a clear glue
Skeeter, Looks like a great way to improve on my technique! I like your buckle style better than mine.

Wombi, as frizzy mentions, the glue works well! I used a small amount of Super Glue to keep the ribbon ends from fraying when I assembled my straps. |

Re: Scale ratchet straps
Skeeter improved on my technique, and shared it.
One of the replies to his video has released the buckle file for 3D printing https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4106663 Rather than glue the ends to prevent fraying, i just toast them with a lighter. Melty but not burned.

Re: Scale ratchet straps
I wish I'd thought to toast em, rather than glue. Your method would have been a LOT easier, & less messy!

Re: Scale ratchet straps
I just ran across a 'ratchet' idea that should be easier and better looking than my 'bent 8' buckles. Also uses doubled hook ends that should be stronger but more tricky to make than my 'coat hangars'
Might even work better for 3D printing? Guy takes 2 plates and 3 pins to make an offset adjuster to control the line. Real url https://www.modelltruckforum.de/inde...eNo=9&8d52d8f4 English https://translate.googleusercontent....Nl2D4RQnYyXJ5Q
