Default New Guy with a project

Hey Guys,

I am new to the group and thought I would intro myself. I currently model live steam trains in 1/8th scale. After seeing some CAT equipment at Cabin Fever, I thought that a RC dozer would look really good in a scale scene with the trains. I am looking at building a 1955 CAT D9E. I'm not really sure where to begin or how to go about powering this dozer. Since it will be in 1/8 scale I figure I will have room to put just about whatever I need to power it. Any suggestions and advice? Here is a pic of one I want to build.

Nice choice! Well I think I would look at window or whipper motors that are 12 volt awsome choice will it be made of steel also?

I've always wanted a D9G or H working model. Look at Jerry Hall's wooden models on here. 1/8th would make it much more easy to fit the electrics into. You may need to cover the engine compartment to conceal the electrics,or if it had a cab, that gives you room too.
I don't think one of these 1/12th scale 9's have been built yet from Classic Construction Models. Only a prototype shown here.

Take a look at how greg built his D8 http://rctruckandconstruction.com/sh...ht=greg&page=3 Start with Post #59, don't worry about high drive, the inside's are the same. These are the motor's that Greg used, I bought some for a 1:8 D4h that I haven't started yet. http://servocity.com/html/25_rpm_offset_gearmotor.html

This must be the week to start scratch builds. I'll be watching this one closely.

Did you have your train at the show, I seen some nice ones?

I was with Godshall Machining. We had a 2-8-0 locomotive on display. I do mostly trains but I think a couple of dozers to scale would look grreat next to all the other stuff. I need to find some good pics to look at before I begin.

Hi Clinch..Above is a utube link to my 18 scale D9E and 1/7 scale d8 2U...The D9 is geared too slow and the D8 is geared a bit too fast.. The D8 is first and the D9 is shown in action towards the end..

I powered both with 90 degree drive auto electric window motors ( right hand and left hand) with the output shaft coming out of the transmission case at the location of the pinion gear on the real machine..I used #25 roller chain to power each final drive bull gear..A Dimention Engineering Super Sabre 25 RC speed control is used to direct the motors..The 12 volt lead acid battery is hidden in the diesel engine block..I will try to find photos taken along the way during the construction process..

I hope this helps..

Jerry

Jerry,

Thanks a million for all the pics. Do you have any drawings or info on the D9 dozer? I wish I could find some measurements to start with.

If you would like a copy, please send me your mailing address and I will copy them for you..
