Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
My father has begun the build on this piece of Vancouver Island history. I'll try to keep posting his progress.

He's using RC4WD tires when it's all done http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC02022.jpg |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
WOW!!! This is going to be an awsome build!
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Jordy. Looks like he's off to a flying start. Looking forward to the build. Think he'll have it finished for the Sept. truck show.

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Cool build Jordy.
What scale is he building ? Do you have any idea how many of those truck were in use ? greg |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
The truck will be 1/12 scale and I think there were a few different versions of the truck but not many were produced. Steamer knows a fellow in Victoria who worked building them and has info on them.

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
This will be fun to watch. I like unique builds.:)

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
More progress: front axles are mounted and the rims are roughed in. Now the rear ends are starting to take shape.
The first pic is of my Dad's 1917 Southbend lathe he is useing to make all the parts with. http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC02035.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC02042.jpg |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
WOW that is a big truck! I like the front rims - excellent!
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
very nice lathe, i have a 1936 Southbend lathe same model
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Yes they are a nice lathe. Where I work still has one from when it opened in the 1930's. Simple design and quite sturdy.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
How large are those tires? I like the look of the fronts. Do you have a better picture of the front rims? I'd like to see what you've done to make it look like the bolts are all in them. I haven't really figured out how to do that for my Euc.
Thanks Reg |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
The front rims are GREAT looking! Tell your dad to keep up the GREAT work. The lathe looks a lot like my SB also. Does it have bearings in the headstock or split brass bushings? Mine has bushings with oil cups on all bushings. Can be a real pain to keep lubed and not make a royal mess!!
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
the bolt patterns are just dimples with a center drill. Once the rims are painted they will look better.
The lathe is running in babbit bearings and makes a real mess when running for long periods. I'll forward the kind words to him thanks. |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Good to know, I think I will try that on my Euc. I'm going to have some Butler Bros Logging stickers made for the doors of my truck since they bought the real truck new and used it for road building. Hopefully sometime we can get these things together for a pic when their finished.

More progess
shaping the rearends and cab mock up to assess proportioning. Also a pic of the schematic he's using http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC06581.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC06579.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC06577.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/...n/DSC06580.jpg |

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
No planetaries. Just full floating axles driving the outer hubs.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
What a great design - and the model looks just as excellent :)
The front tires are RC4WD's Rockcrushers - the rear are MIL-SPEC ZXL ? I think they do have some rather nice designs for our applications. |

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking Jordy |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Crawler modellers use various foam inserts. I would assume that they are not typically as loaded as this truck, but it might just do the trick!
BTW, is this a Traxxas Diff? Which model is it from? |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
It's a Traxxas Tmaxx diff. We are going to cut the plastic housing and add a rear pinion to the front diff housing to power the rear axle. We use these diffs in my Dads Challenger log truck and they work very well.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Traxxas rocks :)
I would like to use the Summit's remote locking diff, but I don't have a project for it yet :D |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
This things lookin Bas A$$
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Just wondering if you guys had made any more progress on this truck?
Reg |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
The front axles are done and the rear ends now have pinion carriers. The material for the leaf springs just arrived.
Now with the good weather it's getting harder to spend time in the shop, that and my dad is volunteering his time at McCleans mill national historic site on weekends. He's running the steam donkey and steam loader for 2 shows a day until september. I will post more pics when I get a chance. |
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Judis Priest, that's a giant...I'm lovin it :D;):):cool::eek:

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Yeah I understand, its kinda hard to be in the shop working on this stuff when its nice outside. The "other" toys need attention too! HAHA!

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
I'm not sure if you guys have figured out a solution to your tire issue but after trying many different things(including stiffer foam) the best thing I've come up with is to use foam weather stipping. I was having trouble with my front tires so I bought some 1 1/4"x 3/16" weather stripping, put some plastic rap over my rims(so it I could slip it off) and rapped it around until it was the right diameter for the inside of the tire. Then I slid it off the rim and carefully shoved it into the tires. It's amazing how strechy those tires really are as the weather strip it quite stiff. Works really well for me, it still has some give but will hold its shape under load even when turning.

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
I have to agree also:cool:
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Good idea on the weatherstripping foam. You might also try the plastic bb's. They help the tire hold its shape, but still offer some give to grip better. Can be a pain to fill the tire though.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Dad got the spring packs and trunion saddles done this weekend. Also narrowed the rear ends 1" to get a more scale look.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Cool, can't wait to see it. Do you think he'll have it finished for the antique truck show?
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
He's trying for the show but it's too soon in the build to know how things will work out.
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Does the show have an official date yet?

It's a bit of a drive for me but not a bad idea.

Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Any updates on the truck?
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
Is there any updates on this AWESOME project?
|
Re: Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
It's in a glass case along with Hank's other models at a museum in Port Alberni BC. I think Lou might have some pictures of the display but I could be wrong.
