Hydraulics
 

Hi, I am scratch building a Cat 330b, 1/14 or close. I am going to take a shot at doing my own hydraulics, starting with the cyls. my questions are what type of material to use (brass s/s etc.) and what wall thickness should I be looking at?

Honestly, if you don't know what material, sizes, etc already, you will be better of buying cylinders already made. You're gonna need nipples, o-rings/seals, brass, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.....and a machine to make all the parts....just trying to save you a little headache and a lot of money...just my .02 worth

1.5mm +/- 0.5mm wall thickness is natural. Will also like to mention that we are, among else, talking about machining external and internal o-ring grooves of +/- 0.05mm tolerances to make it a success. And to have detailed knowledge of how full scale cylinders looks like inside doesn't hurt.

:rolleyes:hmm there is an option that you can use use to learn buy a part to learn from so you have a hands on part or learning tool just like a school does and most of the other builders do how else does someone learn but by example ;)::update:

Thanks for your replies, I do have a mill, lathe etc. and some experience using same. I was only looking for material, sizes etc.

Go to magomhrc.com and there you can get the dimensions of what they use. I have a Track loader from them. They sell cylinder parts. So you can build your own.

Ideally, you will want to use brass.

I use all aluminum for my cylinders the tube is usually .064 wall and the ends are welded in with a welding rod that uses propane or map gas torches. Many laugh at me but the cylinders take 300PSI as this welding rod when used properly makes the weld stronger than the original aluminum. I usually clean up the inside of the tube with 600 grit sandpaper and scotchbrite the seals are neoprene u cups.
If anyone is interested the welding rod comes from Weeks Distributors in the states. All my models are welded together with these rods saves the expense of a welder and power to run it.
