Butler Bros Mark 5 logging truck
 

My father has begun the build on this piece of Vancouver Island history. I'll try to keep posting his progress.

The Tonka tires are just for mock up. He's using RC4WD tires when it's all done

What scale is he building ? Do you have any idea how many of those truck were in use ?

The truck will be 1/12 scale and I think there were a few different versions of the truck but not many were produced. Steamer knows a fellow in Victoria who worked building them and has info on them.

More progress: front axles are mounted and the rims are roughed in. Now the rear ends are starting to take shape.
The first pic is of my Dad's 1917 Southbend lathe he is useing to make all the parts with.

Yes they are a nice lathe. Where I work still has one from when it opened in the 1930's. Simple design and quite sturdy.

How large are those tires? I like the look of the fronts. Do you have a better picture of the front rims? I'd like to see what you've done to make it look like the bolts are all in them. I haven't really figured out how to do that for my Euc.

The front rims are GREAT looking! Tell your dad to keep up the GREAT work. The lathe looks a lot like my SB also. Does it have bearings in the headstock or split brass bushings? Mine has bushings with oil cups on all bushings. Can be a real pain to keep lubed and not make a royal mess!!

the bolt patterns are just dimples with a center drill. Once the rims are painted they will look better.
The lathe is running in babbit bearings and makes a real mess when running for long periods.

Good to know, I think I will try that on my Euc. I'm going to have some Butler Bros Logging stickers made for the doors of my truck since they bought the real truck new and used it for road building. Hopefully sometime we can get these things together for a pic when their finished.

Is this going to be like a real truck with axle shafts running from the diff through the axle tube to the outside of the hubs and the wheel bearings are outside the tube? Is it going to have planetaries? It's looking great!

No planetaries. Just full floating axles driving the outer hubs.

What a great design - and the model looks just as excellent :)
The front tires are RC4WD's Rockcrushers - the rear are MIL-SPEC ZXL ?
I think they do have some rather nice designs for our applications.

Yes they are milspecs. and they look very close to the originals. The only problem is the truck is going to weigh around 80 to 100lbs with a load on it and the tires are already flat with just the frame and axles on them. We need to add something inside the tires to stiffen them up.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Crawler modellers use various foam inserts. I would assume that they are not typically as loaded as this truck, but it might just do the trick!

BTW, is this a Traxxas Diff?
Which model is it from?
