Transmission options
 

I'm trying to get an idea of what you guys would recommend for a transmission for my Tonka conversion. I have a stock Tamiya motor and 3-speed transmission, but I won't have enough room inside the cab to use them.

I'm looking for something I can use a 540 motor with, that is shorter in length, height, and isn't too expensive.I haven't had much luck with the vendors sites, when it comes to price.

Rob check out RC4WD for a transmission they have a 2 speed that is fairly compact. Ed

Ed, that one is on my list, but a little more than I want to spend. I do think it would be a great fit though.

Thanks for the links. I really like the looks of these, and the low profile they provide. however both are on the upper limit of my budget. I had never been on that site before, but I do plan on checking them out more thoroughly.

I've also been looking at the RC4WD planetary transmissions. If I coupled a 16:1 with a 65t motor, I would probably have all the speed I needed.

Is anyone using one of these?

A bit different approach here - but take a look at some of the robot shops - they carry electric motors with gear reduction units already attached. sometimes they are more affordable. but they are generally more compact.

I too would suggest looking at the planetary style gearmotors. You might even consider robbing such a set-up from a cheap power screwdriver, or an old cordless drill. You could run a rear axle, using a driveshaft with that set-up, or you could also drive the wheels directly off the output shaft of the gearmotor, although then you will one motor for each wheel you wish to power.

Servonaut planetary gearmotors are strong, quiet and compact. Over here in the old world a lot of folks that are into RC trucks, quickly throw out the noisy, backlashing Tamiya 3 speed, and it's motor which is more suitable for Formula 1...Most popular is the GM32U370, 7.2 V and output speed of about 370-400 rpm. (The speed with a standard 1:2.666 differential with equal 2'nd gear on a standard Tamiya 3 with a motor turning 6-7000 rpm, as of e.g an LRP Truckpuller) Will give a speed of 1.5 mph, which many find very suitable, and have no trouble dealing with total weights of 50-60 lbs. there is also the GM32U450, 12 V, which got double power. Costs about 100 USD. I don't know if there are any dealers over there, or what shipping cost from Germany. Will be cheaper disassemble a battery screwdriver, if one comes over one with a suitable rpm. About 150 rpm on the wheels of Tamiya 1:14 size tires gives the 1.5 mhp speed..

My vote would be a pre-assembled gearmotor as suggested by Izzy - absolutely right to look at the robot parts suppliers....

I have a 14:1 on the way from korea. I'll see what it's like when it gets here. might be too slow at 14:1 for drive motor but it is intended for my lift. there is a lower reduction to which might be what the RC4WD ones are.

Thanks.I've seen a 1:5 ratio one also on eBay.I'm running a 45t motor from rc4wd.Appreciate you giving me your input.

A 4:1 or a 5:1 is a good auxiliary reduction box to add to another main transmission, but you'll want a lot more reduction than that, if you are thinking of replacing a Tamiya 3 speed with a more compact planetary or spur gear transmission.

Ok.Thanks.I'm looking for something a little more compact to replace the 3 speed that I have in my KH.Looked at the links on here and was thinking of running one of the robot planetary ones.Just don't know which ratio to go with.

I just put one of these into my Knight Hauler. Tried it first with a RC4WD 80 turn modified Crawler motor...a little too slow. Next put the original 540 Tamiya motor that came with K.H...runs great. I've got 2 speeds instead of the stock 3 speeds. These planetary gears are much quieter than the stock 3 speed Tamiya transmission and a lot smother. I would recommend this as a must do for all the Tamiya truck line.
