Re: optimus prime transformers

Im thinking about it. I found some quarter rounded plastic strip at the hardware store, but am pondering how to attach it and how it affects how the front end of the trailer is structurally built....

Re: optimus prime transformers

One thing I noticed and im not sure if I can recreate it, is that the front corners of the trailer are actually rounded. Might make things difficult to mount though, may stick with square.

Re: Bob's Hauler

Got the sides of the hood trimmed up, cut the fenders from polypipe, and added a side to them from styrene. Have to smooth off the bottom of the fenders, and may add a small lip to them on the inner...

Re: Bob's Hauler

Oh and i'm planning a 3rd already, and have a 4th i'm thinking about.
Next up will be a HET M1070. Am already planning the parts, since this one should be a quick build. (famous last words?) lol

Re: Bob's Hauler

Actually as i mentioned in my OP thread, i used a scribing tool to cut it.
Theres already an engraved panel line where the hood meets the cab, so easy to scribe along to cut. And to cut the sides...

Re: Bob's Hauler

Have made a start! Gives me something to work on while waiting for primer to dry on the OP build!

I'm changing the front fenders, and have extended the hood. Chop chop.

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Was poking around online tonight, and came across this site, sells Tamiya semi axles converted for steering. Sells the conversion by itself as well, but an interesting option if you have to use semi...

Re: Bob's Hauler

It'll be based on 4.
And yes it will have double headlights, have a pair spare.

Have decided not to do the doublehump fenders from the pic, but mostly because i'm going to do it as a tri-axle.

Re: Bob's Hauler

Yeah I think ill do #4. That will be so much easier to paint than OP, this one is all straight lines!

Re: Bob's Hauler

Only reason #2 is low on the list is that i have one of Brians ali grilles spare. Would be a shame to paint it black.

Bob's Hauler

OK, so with the frustration the paint has been giving me on my Optimus Prime build, i need to make something where i can feel like i'm making progress.

So, before i build my M1070, i'm going to...

Re: Movie Optimus Prime build

Putty i mostly use Tamiyas polyester putty. Has a hardener so hardens in no time at all, and easily sandable. Very smooth with no grain, applies like cream.

Primer i mostly use a grey acrylic...

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Offset might not be a bad thing, might let me match the tires to the correct width of the truck.

I think i might just have to get a set of tires/wheels and see what works.

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Hmmmm, i've been doing my research on axles/wheels. tires etc (trying to avoid going back to my disastrous paint on my OP truck), and have found the following.

1/12 seems to be the scale to build...

Re: Movie Optimus Prime build

Yeah, I just need to keep calm, and avoid throwing the body at a wall! lol
I'm trying to do as much of it myself as possible, so i will get there!

I'm much more used to painting military models,...

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Hey Sass, what are the dimensions of those Tamiya hummer wheels? Are they hex or pin drive?

Re: Movie Optimus Prime build

Yeah when I saw the blue lift up my heart just sunk. All that work shot to sh!t.
Its because of the silver, looking under the peeled blue, its silver. So the blue did adhere to the silver, but the...

Re: Movie Optimus Prime build

Yeah i'm happy with the colouring (finally), just that !@#$%&^ peeling!

I think i'll have to sand down all the blue to primer and fill where necessary to remove the flame contours. Then respray...

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Sweet jeebus thats beautiful! I hadnt seen that before at all!

Thats built in 1/14 though, which is what i'd prefer. It look like he used tamiya semi axles, and made 2 ali brackets for each side...

Re: Bob's M1070 (maybe)

Ok cool, so it looks like 1/12 is the scale to go for then.
I looked up getting wideners for the dual output semi axles, but for the price plus axle, its cheaper to just get a tlt axle and mod it...

TLT axle size

Can anyone tell me the size of a Tamiya TLT axle?

Searching gets me results from 168mm to 180mm, but they dont say if thats just the axle case, or from outside of the drive hex, or axle to axle.
