Fit a long pipe on it and keep it higher than the tank?

Chris is right, just run a pipe higher than the tank top. If you are worried about leakage you can get a filter/breather end fitting but always keep that upright and higher than the tank top. Gusto make small fittings and I'm sure they make a 3 or 4mm glass/ceramic breather end fitting that will simply push into the end of your overflow pipe.

I ran out time to edit my post but as an alternative you can use a small engine fuel tank filter like this one probably available from anywhere.
