Some radios are wired for 3 pos, some aren't.
When i first got into rock crawling it was a common thing to pop open a traxxas TQ3, change the thumb rocker to a toggle. All the wiring was already to the switch so it was quick and easy. I've also cracked open some that don't even have any pads at the board to make it happen.
