Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I was busy doing other things today but I did manage to get a start on the turn table. I've been trying to decide if I should go with scale 14' or 16' bunks. The real truck had 16's but in 1/10 scale that is 19.2". This is a big truck!
I finally got my hands on the pictures of the real truck. Unfortunately there is only three pictures and they're all from the front but one is from the left and one is from the right so at least I can see some cab detail. Anyway here is one my Dad took the day it arrived... |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
The KW is looking great. The Bruder looks like a 1/32 scale model, sitting on the turntable! It must be nice working in 1/10. Machining small parts like these only gets harder, as you go smaller in scale. It'd be fun to build a big truck like this, but I'm not so good with body work. I don't think I'd be able to pull off a cab as nice as yours. For someone who doesn't think they know what they are doing, I'd say you're doing just fine.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
She's a little plump but that's OK....
It has it's good points and bad points building in this scale. It is nicer to make the parts as they are a lot bigger BUT you have to make everything! There's no going online or to the hobby shop for a set of diffs or a scale set of tires that's for sure. I enjoy the challenge though... I really don't know what I'm doing but I am getting better at making it up as I go along. Reg |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I guess! I just figured out that the frame is 2 1/2 inches too short in the middle! I guess I will be practicing with my grinding skills once again! Thats what happens when you start building off of drawings that aren't accurate before you get solid dimensions!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Since I figured out the truck was too short I had no other option but to cut it in half and weld in a piece. Thanks to my half-*** welding skills and my "superb" grinding ability() you can hardly tell anything was changed. I've also machined the rear spring-trunion mounts, built some ladders and started on the radiator guard in the last couple days. I'm going up island to look at some of these trucks this week so after that I should be able to finish the sheetmetal.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, I wish I could tig weld that well. I wouldn't have to bolt so much stuff together! Nice work on the frame stretch. The nice thing about working with metal is if you make it to short, you can always make it longer again, if you can cut and weld.
