Thanks very much guys. I have been too busy the last couple of days to make any progress but I may get something done soon.
Nate, I think it is fairly common with these big trucks. This way any truck with a bunk could tow it instead of needing a specific truck. On the other hand trucks that had preloader log trailers had a fifth wheel so they would that style. Here's a couple pics of the bunk style hitches. The one trailer doesn't even have a pivot ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reg |

"Todays progress....All together there is at least 6 hours in these four wheels...I know that I am probably pretty slow and that others could build them faster/better but the next time someone asks me why our models are so expensive and how you could possibly have that much time in them, I may just slap them."

Come on now, I never get mad...
![]() It started to rain this afternoon and my work was done for the day so I got back into the shop. I was happy because I got to play with my favorite toy(TIG) and stick some pieces together! My plan is to build the entire back half including suspension before I weld it to the rest of the frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This one is for size reference...Yes it is almost 60" ![]() ![]() Thanks for looking! |

I put in a couple more hours on the lowbed today. When I started out on this I told myself that I would build it light and not worry about it being very strong...Well by the time I'm finished it will be heavy as usual and I'll probably be able to give kids rides at the next show. Anyway, I got a bit more done on the ramps so just a couple more things and I will have to start on the suspension.

Thanks Ari! I spent the whole day working on this(almost 9 hours) but I think I got a lot accomplished too! The suspension is nearly finished now so I can weld the two main components together and start making a deck.
Here's a short video of the walking beams and axles after welding them to the frame...http://youtu.be/4BOsjsATX6A I started out by making the walking beams out of some 1 1/2x1/2 flat bar. ![]() ![]() I then lathed and milled some pieces for the axles. The axles should be held to the bushings with U bolts but this trailer is meant to work to scale not so much be detailed. ![]() ![]() Once everything fit together I decided that it needed more flex so I re-drilled the bushings to a larger size and added some rubber hose. ![]() I then welded the pieces to the frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lastly I welded some lugs to the loading ramps. ![]() ![]() Thanks for lookin! |
