Re: my first semi build (dump)
hi guys it has been a while since I posted. my life is very busy here so not much time for hobbies, but I did get some time tonight after my sons hockey game to work on the autocar, instead of spending nights just thinking about it and doodling ideas on paper.
So I will start my small update here. a few nights ago I sketched out a scale drawing of what I want my Autocar cab to look like . it is quite a bit different then the stock king cab. lots of little mods. also sketched out a rough box design. now on to tonight. cut away hood sides so I can start fabing up new side and incorperate the new fenders. and since I was in the cutting mood and feeling a bit crazy, I decided to fix the problem with cab height, (it is too high for a autocar) so I ................ Cut the roof off. then took a 7mm section out of the middle and set the roof back on. just rough right now then I marked where the windows get lowered about 5mm. and rough cut it out. here is a idea of what it looks like on the chassis. thanks for looking |

Jason. Starting to look more like an A car now. Roof line looks spot on.

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Looking good Jason. I'm not sure if you know this and just have not done it jet, or if you are scratching your head trying to figure it out.
To get the roof to fit right from the point you have it, you will need to cut it in half from left to right and add a filler piece. Good job tackling that big of a modification on a shell.. -Mike

Re: my first semi build (dump)
So you're gonna add a gear reduction unit between the motor & trans?
I think it's 50rpm gh motors that ppl are using for their screwdrives. The kit motor is a Johnson 15000rpm. I forget how many teeth are that 1st lower gear, is it 36? With an 8 tooth pinion that would be 4.5 to 1 or 3333rpm on that top shaft. That's pretty fast! Perhaps an additional planetary or spur gear reduction on the back of the trans & in combo with a reduction on the front of trans with a slower (higher winding) motor will give the necessary slow speed & torque you'll require for the screw drive and slow your trk down to a more desireable scale speed? Or is that "more on that later as all the work is not done on that yet." part yet to come? |

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Nice work on the modification and clever idea using the trans to power the dump. It will be cool to see it run.

Wow Joe, you are making my head spin, you thinking way to much for me. I am not that smart. lol I get ideas try them if they don't work I try something different. I just hope someday I have a something that works. your builds and videos are pretty much what got me hooked on this rc construction stuff and yes the "more on that later" did mean I don't have it all figured out yet. |

Re: my first semi build (dump)
i like that pto idea alot i think i would find a small gear reduction head off a small motor and attatch it to your pto shaft for the torque your gonna need to lift a heavy dump box of dirt or what ever your haulin awsome idea though

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Great ingenuity fabbing up your box sides.
A planetary drive from a small drill might be the ticket, afix it to your dump frame & run a driveshaft from the trans to it with your servo operated dog clutch somewhere in the middle. |

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Jason. She's looking more like the A Car every post. I like the way the box turned out, styrene is very tough when it's all stuck together.

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Very nice work Jason The box looks like it will take a few yards of material. I like the square fender look...
Do you get your styrene in Victoria, or do you order it. greg |

Greg I buy the styrene here in victoria at industrial plastics and paints, they sell it in 2'x4' sheets, different thickiness, a full sheet was between $12 to $16 the last time I got it. |
